Regional versus LCC?
I apologize if my search skills are subpar today, but I just couldn't find a thread. I'm a newly upgraded 9E captain. Happy there, no big deal, but I'm wondering whether it's wiser to stay at the regional or look into an LCC. Does the possibility of getting a 737 or Bus type help when applying to the majors, or is TPIC more important?

Probably TPIC. Get a 1000 hrs and then reevaluate. Including potential CKA options.
The majors, except for perhaps SW and maybe NK, don’t care if you have an XYZ type rating. But there’s no telling under a points based system if an additional type rating triggers the call. I wouldn’t quit a 121 CA job, if I had low 121 TPIC, to get a bigger jet type rating at a LCC if I was a young guy (<45?). $.02 |
Since you've already upgraded, get 1000 TPIC and then consider your options. Who knows, maybe DAL will call in the meantime.

Get the TPIC time, it’s more valuable than another type. And, if you want or need to go elsewhere in aviation, it’s real valuable.

So far the consensus seems to be get the TPIC which makes sense. That also opens up LCA/Instructor options as well. It's what I thought, but its good to get a sanity check. Thanks.

Throw your apps out to all now and keep building TPIC until you’ve got another option to seriously consider (CJO after an interview at a U/LCC or major). 1000TPIC opens doors at a couple more companies but it may not make sense to stay depending on your age and who offers you a job at the time.
Careful... I would not throw apps out unless you're willing to interview and accept a job offer. If you decline an interview or job offer, you may burn that bridge forever. It's good to have apps on file (sustained interest often counts), but if you're not actually prepared to make the move, I'd keep your available date about one year out so you'd don't get called before you're ready. |
Unless the LCC you're looking at offers a huge bump in QOL, get your 1000 TPIC first. Most places hold that in higher regard than a type-rating, which is something I didn't know until it was too late.
Network, volunteer, etc. You have to be prepared to work where you're at if the majors don't call. If you're happy where you are now, why change that? |
