Default Know pilots that walked away from the career?

Curious about stories of pilots you have worked with who up and quit and left either due to low pay, or QOL issues and left aviation to go work a non flying career.

Thanks

I know plenty of them. About half the ones I know are trying to come back now.

The one guy who I thought would never come back called me about a month ago for some advice on how to go about it. I don't think he'll pull the trigger, but I was surprised he even asked.

Yes, I know both. I have a buddy who decided a job in the government would be much more fun/rewarding so he took an exam, passed, and is now serving overseas. I also know a dude who walked away and was back within 2 years. He's now at a cargo carrier and having a great time. You looking for advice or just curious?

Wages are rising so some displaced/disgruntled pilots are coming back. Many of those guys will never return to aviation.

I'm trying to evaluate all sides of the career. I'm currently working towards my commercial license and building time to make a career out of it. But I want to understand why some leave the professional pilot career. And I do see that opportunities and wages are Incressing which I think is much needed to get pilots compensated as they should be for a skilled trade.

I have known quite a few people to do this. All the people that were fed up with flying ultimately went to work for the FAA. They wanted a schedule and a steady source of income. Going to work for the FAA was a smooth transition since they typically hire people that come from airlines or the charter world

The lost decade- 2000s- stalled many careers. Post 9/11. 2008 Market crash... low wages. People were fed up and found more happiness and money elsewhere. Unfortunately, it took a deadly airline accident in early 2009 to change much of that. Couple that with mass retirements at the major airline level and it has become the greatest pilot hiring market we've ever seen. And for a while. It's all timing.
