There is a significant time commitment though, which seems to be par for the course for someone in my situation. We train you and give you your ATP and you have to fly for us for a couple years.

Any last words of wisdom before I commit?

You will gain more experience flying 135 than instruct and just starting out you should be looking for solid experience. If they fly good hours per year go for it.

It will be interesting to see if the naysayers are correct. Will report back in a few years. Lol.

I was out of flying for 10 years. I've had 4 careers, and a bunch of jobs. I was paid the most for commercial flying of any job I've had. My current airline job is my second favourite of all my jobs, and works really well for me. We are planning to move overseas, which is easy to do with my current airline...planning on living in SEAsia in the winter, and the Mediterranean area in the Summer.

Some suggestions:
Look into Fractional/Charter jobs. They are all home based, so you don't have to worry about the commute. And, NetJets, which is a 91K fractional, has three different schedules (work more, medium or less), and you can get a schedule that is 8-9 months long. One of my friends is flying there because he knows his summer schedule, and does biplane barnstorming all summer.

Other airlines, such as Kalitta Air, Atlas, Omni, ATI have home basing and/or travel to/from work provided. With those airlines, you tend to work more days in a row, and go worldwide, so if you want to see the world, that is a different option compared to DAL, for example.

Flying for local law enforcement/govt agency is another interesting idea.

There is also the overseas option, which has worked out great for some people.

God Bless, and Namaste...

Right. Thanks for all the ideas. Have thought about the corporate and fractional thing. The plan is not to move the family though. Hoping to get based in NY eventually. I should probably try to get in the CAE right seat program and get a type rating!

SIC ratings are pretty much useless in the US. Just get your time and move on.

Default Thought

I'm kind of in the same position and this thread has been very helpful, thanks for starting it up. I'm 38, a very part-time contractor CFI (15 years), my husband is the bread-winner at a major, we have 8 kids and I always thought a CFI job was my calling. And now I'm ready for a new office.

One thought that I haven't seen that I fall back on is quite simply: Faith. Are you and your family believers?

Sometimes we get these dreams that keep us up at night and they seem crazy and impossible, that there's no way it can happen. There's a reason you keep dreaming of this. Sounds like you've done your homework. Time for a leap of faith my friend.

Best of luck and hopefully I'll see you up there one day soon!

You belong in the airlines. All the big guys have very junior bases in NY. You're seniority, pay, and QOL progression will better significantly better than most airline pilots who can't wait to get out of NY. You will not see better pay and QOL anywhere in aviation than living in base in NY with a major airline. Especially given all the retirements.

Wow. I can’t believe it’s been two years since this post. I thought I would give an update.

So far, all has gone according to plan. Even with COVID, which has been amazing and a blessing.

I got my 1500, upgraded to Captain and got my ATP (at the peak of COVID no less) and have continued to fly around 80 hours a month.

Currently building 135 PIC time (2000 TT and about 500 scheduled 135 commuter / PIC time) and with any luck, there will be some movement when my training contract is up in about a year.

Generally speaking, it’s been awesome and I only wish I had made this move sooner, but better late than never. It’s been challenging with the family but no surprises.

Thought I would share some good news and thanks or all the advice from folks on here. If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Somebody who actually follows through on future promises. Glad things are going good, thanks for the update.
