Quick Poll (What would you do?)

Asking Major Airline pilots with a few years under their belt...

Assuming you plan to live in the Seattle area(or assume Boeing's plant was in your home town), would you :
- Prefer to work for Boeing as a production/test pilot for 170K/yr starting pay (top out in the low to mid 200s after 10-20 yrs). Mostly standard 40hr work week with 2-4hr flights nearly every weekday.
- Prefer to fly for a Major Airline.
- Prefer to fly for a Major Airline even if commuting.

I just need some objective perspective from the airline side (I already have a good idea what I'd be getting into on the Boeing side).

Top-tier majors will have good 401k plans, plus the travel benefits (which extend into retirement). They will also pay $400K+ in the long-term.

Also once you get above the bottom 20% of the seniority list, the conventional wisdom is that you should be relatively "furlough proof". I don't know how that compares with job stability at Boeing.

Long-term, airline schedules would provide better QOL flexibility, and better pay, but there would be some dues-paying when junior. But plenty of folks would kill for a $200K job flying big jets on a 9-5 basis in a place like SEA.

I think your question is really about long-term stability and schedule, and finances.

Major airline. Live in Base.

> No commuting.

> No politics.

> 15-18 days OFF per Month.

> Days OFF are really days OFF.

> No Butt Kissing for promotion.

> No after hours work, worries, cell phone tethered to your neck.

> Bid turns and be home every night. ( Sometimes easily done even when you are junior if you live in base, commuters hate those lines.)

Hands down no question the best gig out there if you can get it...

Good Luck.

You may want to consider days away from home in the mix.
Makes a difference with little ones at home.
Pay at a legacy will far outpace Boeing in the long run, depending on your age.

Production test isn’t very political—fly the test card, write up what needs writing up, go home. Yes, there can be pressures on completion to make deliveries, but the OEMs all have rules on scheduling, parameters for successful test, etc. Decent work, but very repetitive. Yes, I worked for an OEM, not Boeing.

Not political?

What are salaries, promotions, schedules, aircraft assignments, etc. based upon?

Curious.
