ATC to Major
Hello as the title states I’m looking for advice on changing careers. I currently have about 110 hours with a PPL. I have 15 years ATC experience and recently started flying again. I have an associates degree and realize I might need to finish my four year. I’ve wanted to be an airline pilot since I was a kid but the lost decade and family obligations got in the way. I currently have enough saved to finish my ratings and my wife had a solid career. I posted in the major section because that is my career goal. What would be my fastest path to a major? Also does my ATC background help?

Unfortunately ATC experience is nothing more than a bullet point on a resume. May look good to an employer once you get an interview, but no real advantage to actually getting the call. It’s almost all about flying experience and to a small extent who you know. I’d say that puts you in the same boat as the majority of others on this forum. All searching for the quickest way to a major. I’d say there is enough speculation on that topic to keep you busy reading for a while.

I was ATC for almost 11 years just under 2 with the FAA. Now I’m a regional captain with about 5000 hrs, 1500 TPIC and a bachelors and haven’t heard a peep from the big 5 (UA, DL, AA, SWA, FedX). No failures, 3.1 GPA, honorable discharge and have multiple letters of recommendation.
But having the ATC background (all RADAR/ARTCC) has helped me tremendously through training and even today as a CA.

But as you said, ATC experience will not change the hiring equation much. Nor will most other non-pilot aviation experiences (aircrew, NAV/WSO, etc).
