That was always in the FOM back in the day. I knew plenty of folks who disregarded it after 117.

But if you're going to do that (outside flying against company) that's risky when moving on to another airline.

1. If you log it, you have to explain why you were violating the rules at your current airline.

2. If you don't log it, are you going to lie on the background and PRIA forms to hide that employment? Might get away with cash under the table part 91 stuff.

When I started 3 years ago the FOM stated that pt 91 and flight instruction was okay but that 121/135 and 91k needed approval because of 117 limits. The policy I stated was signed July of 2018

You're only reading half of it. If you're under the 121 rest rules (i.e. cargo) then you're right.

BUT, if you're under the 117 rules, then the only flight time that counts against the limitations are operations for a 121/135/91k operator.

If you aren’t averaging 83.33 hours a month, probably the best thing for most guys would be to pick up flying in open time, especially if you are living in base, on reserve, and not flying much. For most companies it’s
1. Over guarantee
2. Possibly premium
and
3. Help you build hours more quickly because the goal IS NOT to stay at a low wage regional job as long as possible.

So, no CFI work, either.

Just best that your 'other job' is outside of a cockpit.
Avoids any FAA rule entanglements.

If you want to 'joy-riding' in the sky, on your own dime...have fun...just don't accept $$ for it.
That’s not what I wanted to see, but I agree with you unfortunately...

Now, can I CFI for free and make things work? LOL...

I believe that Part 135 allows flying on the side, but only Part 91 flying. Part 135 + Part 135 is a no no, and Argus won’t let you be Argus with another company to the best of my knowledge.

I know many Part 135 pilots that have Part 91 side gigs.

But, back to your original question, a LOT of pilots are REALTORs... It’s the toughest mini law exam I ever took, but it helped me get commissions on the sale and purchase of my houses. It’s not a bad gig...

I plan on continuing work as an attorney part time while flying. A FO at WN told me recently the worst part of his job was the down time at a place like Omaha (or anywhere else really away from home) for 12+ hours after finishing up his trips for the day. Working on the side will hopefully help with filling up some of that time.

Thats my plan if I do make the transition to commercial flying. Spent 20 years building a law practice so there is no way I would just close the doors, in fact I simply couldn't do it from an economic standpoint. With remote computer access, scanned documents/e-mail and video conference, I could continue to work remotely during down time, of course at a reduced work load. Thankfully my wife is the office manager and I have a paralegal that has been with me for 18 years so I have the backup to try to pull something like this off.

Good to see that I'm not the only one trying to become a "recoverying attorney" by flying...your plan looks good to me, especially if you have your own shop! I'm at a firm, but they leave me alone and I only need to work about 2.5 days a week to keep things going, so I'll use the free time to get to 1,500 TT ASAP.
