Default Can pilots have other jobs while flying?

I just stated as and FO at a regional airline and I was wondering what other pilots do for extra money.

I’m just seeing what other jobs that pilot have to make extra money while flying. I’m just looking to see what jobs pilots are able to have and how they got into those side jobs.

I've done it.
I can tell you that it works best if your "other job" is NOT piloting.
That way your current employer can't complain that your 'outside work' is interfering with your day job....say, taking part of your monthly allowable flight hours. (Technically, if they are Part 91, they don't count.)
Also very helpful if the "other job" has very flexible hours.

What's your area of expertise?
Done some accounting? ....do some of that part-time.

Any ‘commercial’ flying ads to your flight time limitations.
Either pick up overtime trips or look at something outside of aviation.
There’s a thread here on insurance adjusters.

I've done a lot of additional employment, including in many cases, flying.

It's generally best to coordinate that with your primary employer.

On occasion, it's not.

That was changed with 117. 121/135 counts against you, but some
other 91 flying does not, not sure where they draw the line but you can definitely CFI all you want.

Can also do any other job you want, no rest rules apply. But if you have an accident, they'll research your sleep habits. If you worked the night shift at the UPS warehouse, then showed up at 0600 for a 12-hour flying day you'll get violated if something happens.

I've always understood that 121/135 + 91 is okay (unless the CP has a problem with it).

135/121 + 135/121 might be tough, if not discouraged.

Some, not all, airlines have gotten rid of the company policy ban on outside flying.

That would be special permission only by policy at almost all companies.

Plus you'd have to reconcile your block and FDP status with both employers. Many have no mechanism to do that, hence they ban outside 121/135 flying. They are required to have internal accounting for that, can't just take your word that you're good. If their system doesn't have a mechanism to add external flying, then they can't comply.

Meanwhile SKW added a ban on outside flying last year. New policy that nobody knows about states "Pilots owe their professional services to SKW exclusively. Outside flying for any type of compensation or hire must be specifically approved by the Vice President"

Unless I’m reading it wrong this LOI states flight instruction IS ‘other commercial flying’

That's what I got out of it.
So, no CFI work, either.

Just best that your 'other job' is outside of a cockpit.
Avoids any FAA rule entanglements.

If you want to 'joy-riding' in the sky, on your own dime...have fun...just don't accept $$ for it.
