It's illegal in some states, but if they're asking it must be legal in their state. If you live in another state, check your local laws... sometimes state laws protect a resident employee or job applicant even if he works or applies in another state.
For some jobs (ie sales), they have a good reason for asking... job performance is indicated by commissions above base salary. So a poor salesman might claim a higher income than he actually had to get a new job, so they want to verify that.
Credit score is also something they may check (depending again on state law).
For an airline I can only imagine that they just want to see if you were honest when you applied. If you were not honest, I would probably delete your app and don't interview. I'm talking about gross misrepresentation, not simply rough rounding errors.
