Do the airlines care about total number of busts or do they consider how many you've taken? ie: 5 busts but taken 8 check rides or 2 bust but only took 3 checkrides?

Employers care about the total picture. I have never been asked how many checkrides I've ever taken, and I've never heard of anyone asking such a question, as it's meaningless and irrelevant.

Five is a very large number no matter how many checkrides have been taken.

That was just a setback.

Pretty sure it was five or more. But it was consistent, in every phase of his career.

A guy I know got an interview at a WO with 3 busts. The problem was, he actually had 5 and had "forgotten" about the other two. Just prior to the interview, he changed his app to reflect the 5. He did get an offer at the interview. CP's office reviewed all his paperwork right before he got a phone call rescinding the offer.

Who knows whether it was the 5 busts, or not disclosing the other 2 in the initial application. Either way, didn't look good.

I failed the initial CFI 3x and my COMM/ME once. I was a bit of a dumbass in my early 20s. I got on with a top tier regional. They definitely asked about it in the interview but I owned the hell out of my failures and emphasized what I had learned from them. I also had over 20 years of accident/incident/violation-free flying and a fresh ATP between those failures and my regional interview. I upgraded in minimum time and I have zero failures in 121 training. Am I screwed at a major? Maybe. But the only way to ensure that I'm screwed is to not try.

I think you can overcome that at an interview, but the trick of course is getting the interview. The computer just counts the total busts, a human can interpret the pattern. May need to work the crowd at job fairs, meet-n-greets, etc. to get some human intervention.

In your case, the pattern would be obvious: young kid doesn't know what he doesn't know, grows up, gets his act together, and now has a lengthy and solid record as a professional pilot. By the time you do a few recurrents and upgrade I think you'll have a shot at some or many majors. Maybe not DAL material (but may as well apply since it's the same app as UAL).

Cast a wide net when the time comes.
