How Is your schedule really?
Hey all. I’m in my fifties and just got a class date at a regional. I have retired from one job already and pretty happy at my present job except for my schedule flexibility and amount of time off.
The regionals attracted me due to the schedule. I understand that it depends on commuting etc. but how good is your schedule really? How about QOL for older FOs that you have worked with.
Thanks, I need to decide if I’m going to make the jump soon.

Do you plan to commute? That really will be a big factor. If you can live in your base and enjoy the varied days off you’ll get, can be great! If you always want Saturday and Sunday off to spend with family.... might rethink it. Do you plan to commute?

No the plan is to live at base. I have heard I could get base from right out of training to 6 months depending on who I talk to. Believe it or not, working weekends and getting time off during the week is really not a factor. Kids are grown etc.

Age is not a QOL factor. It's all about relative seniority in your base, equipment, and seat.
If you live in base, for a "decent" regional, your QOL should be good once you get a little seniority. Compared to typical white-collar.

Like stated, depends on the regional. They are NOT all the same.
At some you can expect to be on reserve in your base for a year plus and not be used that much, while at another you expect to be extended two to three times a month and end up with 10 days off and zero flexibility.
Contract language, staffing, growth, and in flow of pilots change all factors of QOL for new hires.
In the last three years I’ve been at a regional where they ran FOs so ragged they were quitting and going to other airlines quicker than they could train replacements and subsequently had to downgrade captains and delay aircraft deliveries. I’ve also worked at a regional where FOs were lucky to fly more than 15 hours a month due to a lack of movement and overstaffing.
There’s no one answer. There are MANY regionals, and within each regional different bases can mean huge differences.
