Default What's better? SE Piston PIC or Jet SIC?

Hey guys,

Low time CPL MEIR with just over 300 TT.

I am considering these 2 options: Getting my CFI/CFII/MEI and instruct to get to 1500 or go with an offer I have from a friend of a friend to pay for my own type rating on Hawker 700 and/or 800 and fly in the right seat as SIC.

Which one is more valuable between single piston PIC and jet SIC when it comes to applying to regionals?

Both options will cost me around $15K

Thanks in advance.

Meet the requirements for an ATP and you’ll get whatever regional job you want. Whichever of those two will get you there quicker will be the most valuable to you. Getting your ratings is the safer bet and probably quicker, so I’d go with that.

Being a PIC for the next X hours will make you more valuable to regional captains.

You can get to a regional whatever way you get the hours to qualify for an ATP. But at the NEXT level, having CFI/CFII/MEI is likely to gain you more points than having a Hawker SIC rating which you will never again use. The CFI/CFII/MEI experience makes it a lot easier to be competitive for LCA jobs at the regional level as well.

Even though the jet seems good (and it is good experience) today’s options that we have are way better than in previous years. You shouldn’t not ever need to pay for your own type. Maybe it was like that once but not now.

Get your CFI and get PIC. There are also other opportunities as I’m sure you can find, flying jumpers, towing banners, aerial photos etc.

CFI Route. More valuable and will get you the time quicker. Acquiring 1200 hours in a Hawker could take 10 years.

How many hours expected per year on the Hawker? 300-400 hours max? Is there an option to do both? Maybe teach on the side to boost your hours to reach 1500 hours quicker....

Or two years. Find out what the Hawker schedule is like. But, I’d agree the CFI time will be more valuable.
