Currently working as a CRJ-200/900 captain at a regional in Canada. About 3500TT with 300 CRJ PIC and 1500 PIC on a dash 8-100/300/Q400. Working on converting my licenses and wondering how to make the leap into the US. Can I hold a spot at the legacies? If not, should I go to a US regional? DEC? ACMI? LCC? Or stay where I am now and continue to build time (and how much time would I need for the legacies?).
Assuming I will have 4000TT and 1000 CRJ PIC by the time I have all my documents in order.
I plan on living in LA so I’m willing to commute to my regional in Canada if that’s the best option career wise but if there’s a good opportunity in LA I would prefer that.
Thanks in advance all!

You have low time but your time is quality time which is competitive. Throw your app in and I’d be surprised if someone (LCC, ACMI, big 3) doesn’t bite. Don’t leave a descent PIC job for a US regional (just my opinion)... although me the US regionals offer an almost live able wage, although living in SoCal will will dilute that. Get your FAA papers and start applying. Good luck... lots of great guys and gals getting hired with your experience here in the states

You’d easily get a DEC position at a regional and would be very competitive at a ULCC. For a Legacy airline it wouldn’t be impossible with 5K and 1K turbine PIC but the odds are a lot less than the aforementioned two.

Since (assuming) his airline flying is all in Canada, he is does not meet the eligibility requirements of 121.436. That specifies 1,000 hours of 121 SIC or 135 PIC, and the FAA has formally in writing interpreted that the reg literally means US 121 or 135, not any foriegn equivalent.
With that said, the OP would probably have no trouble getting an ACMI job, or likely an LCC job.
Total time and PIC is low for the legacies... if that's your main goal (should be if you're relatively young), you'll need more like 5K TT and 3K TPIC. That seems to be the sweet spot right now (will likely come down as retirements ramp up). So sitting tight up north for more TPIC is safest bet for the legacies. They will appreciate regional TPIC more than LCC/ACMI SIC. They also don't really care much for turbopop PIC.
But with all that said, you meet the mins and people do get called within your range so you should certainly get apps out to all of the legacies, get your paperwork in order, and get some interview prep. You never know when the phone would ring.

Honestly don't know much about Canadian Aviation so I could be totally wrong.

Isn't Air Canada in the middle of a huge pilot shortage/hiring spree? I assume because of CRJ and DHC-8 time you are with Jazz? I was under the impression Jazz had a flow type deal to Air Canada now. If you are willing to commute from LA wouldn't it make more sense to commute for a Canadian Major airline than a US Regional?
