What some of you are not getting, is that an aviation degree might have been useless when you got one, but times have changed. Having one lowers the required time to get a regional job these days. It's called an R-ATP, as this young man or woman has patiently tried explain to your dinosaur skulls.
If you like the intro flight, and find the study material interesting, go for it kid, you'll never work another day in your life. |

Come here seeking advice as a 17 year old with ZERO first hand knowledge or experience in the industry from those of us with decades of experience, and be like, “Nah, I’m right. You’re advice is wrong.” ??? Okay.
I graduated with my aviation degree before you were born, and I still regret it. But you do you. Enjoy that $200,000 of debt and a useless degree. You very clearly understand this industry and the pilot shortage much better than us. Kudos. |

You're right that now is a great time to be in aviation and the flight training is probably worth the investment. What many here are advising not to do is going to an expensive aviation school (e.g., Embry Riddle) and racking up a $200k bill. There are far cheaper options out there that will get you the same ratings and possibly get you finished faster. What you having going for you already is a solid back up plan in the trades. Why not use those skills to either save up and pay as you go and get a degree in another field or finish it online?

With all due respect sir but your time was different than now. You can't compare the industry in the 90s to now. We're in a different decade which means different opportunities. Also, the Kent State program flight fees is really affordable and I'm in state.

I started flying in the regionals in 2005. My last regional job (Endeavor) was last year. I’ve instructed many new RJ pilots with 1500 hours and 23 years of life. I think I have my finger on the pulse of things. |

You come looking for advice from people with experience in the industry, then reject it out of hand. If you want to be patted on the head, go elsewhere. I’ve been throughout the industry for decades, have dozens of friends at all levels of the business. I’ll stand by my assessment.
Enjoy your student debt. |

Try that attitude with that 'grandpa' CA sitting left seat when you try to tell him 'well at ERAU we..............'. Thought I saw something early in the posts. " It's so disheartening to seem some of the responses on here. " Do you need a safe room to meditate? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo0KjdDJr1c Let him go GF. He'll be back here crying about debt and the unfairness of the system in due time or he'll jus disappear into the void of those who knew everything before ever starting step one of the journey. |
