Default Letter of Recommendation question

Because of my 91 job, and the small world that I work in, I don't feel comfortable asking anyone that I have flown with recently for a letter of recommendation. Too much of a chance of it getting back to my present boss. But I know a few people that I can trust from previous jobs. The issue is that its been 4+ years since I have flown with these people, some even longer. Do the airlines disregard LOR's that are more than a certain number of years old? I don't want to bother people for a LOR if it's not going to do me any good.

I had no internals and only 1 recommendation from a fellow 121 pilot. My other 3 were from fellow Army officers (only 1 a pilot) and a gentleman (business owner non-pilot) that I did some contract 91 flying for. Only the 121 was fairly recent - year ish, the other 3 were from working together several/many years ago.

I’d want some that can speak to you as a person/ethics, etc. not just piloting ability.

OK, thanks for that.

Yeah, It's more a matter of who and what, not when.

They do like to see letters from people of substance, ie employers, military CO's, even civic or church leaders as that speaks to aspects of your character beyond aviation monkey skills.

But they also expect at least a couple LORs from pilots you have flown with, ideally CA's or CP's, although letters from previous FO's is fine (especially if they now work where you're applying... BTDT). Non-pilots can attest that you're a great person, but cannot address piloting skills and should attempt to not do so (unless maybe you worked for them as a pilot). Letters from pilots should always attest to your operational emphasis on safety.
