Default College degree, any one will do?

I keep reading both here and the internet at large how big of a deal it is to have a college degree if you want to go into the majors. No problems there, I have a degree, in fact I've had it for almost 20 years, but... it's in graphic design... from a foreign university.
My degree was validated when I applied for my work visa many many years ago (I'm a US citizen now) and I have a document that says it is the equivalent to a bachelor's degree of fine arts in graphic design the US, I even think that I have another document somewhere with an equivalence for my transcripts, which should come around 3-3.5 GPA.
Would that be good to go to a major after a few years in the regionals? It might not help me fly an airplane, but I sure can edit a video of one!

Yes any degree will do. You will get extra credit, and probably called sooner by the top-tier majors.

To get credit for having a degree, it will need to US accreditation. Sounds like you have that.

A MS in electrical engineering from MIT or the Naval Academy might get you a little more credit, but it's certainly not worth repeating college if you already have an accredited degree of any sort.

I have a rather bland, non-technical degree, though I did graduate in 3.5 years with honors.

There was a guy in the military flight program with me, he had the aeronautical engineering degree & talked about becoming an astronaut. Mind you, this was before we even got close to an airplane. This individual barely made it though, went to a very nondescript fleet. He never ended up on the space shuttle.

In current times, it seems a four year degree is less important, still nice to have something.

Few things in life are as useless as a degree in graphic design, trust me.

If someone wants to be an engineer or a doctor, they learn things necessary for their career. Even business administration is beneficial. But a lot of graduates with a degree in advanced underwater basket weaving (or many of the liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences degrees) just do not add much value. Indeed, with what craziness is taught, attending college for these students is detrimental.

I have yet to hear of a student getting a degree that ends in “…studies” getting a job in their major, except for becoming a professor teaching more students their useless major.

Seeing as how you are eyeing a career change into aviation, it's not useless if it puts your application above someone else without one.

Touché.

*I wanted this reply to only say "Touché", it would have been all the more powerful, but here is an extra few characters because it wouldn't let me post it otherwise.

I finally learned to spell library, and they went and changed it to media center.

I would get a degree in something else that could be useful, like finance or nursing. Diversification of one's life skills is a good thing.
