Default What should I look for to decide on a major?

What are the main things to look at when looking into going a direction for a major carrier?
I would like to live in base if possible.
What are other things to look at?
All of the pays seem equal.
Which will take care of you the best?
Which has better benefits?
Yes I’ve looked at this website, but I know there’s more to the story.

I know Americans flow is supposed to be 5 years
Deltas is 3 through their regional
And United is 2 through their regional

I’m 34 and currently at ATP flight school so I should be done in 7 months.
I’ll probably do CFI and also maybe buy my own plane to get to the threshold a little faster.

Where do you want to live? Pick a major with a base that you can drive to in under an hour. That’s only thing you can control and is the biggest quality of life factor there is.

the only thing you need to concern yourself with is the one thing pilots know nothing about and have no control over. That would be the airlines corporate finances.

Those flow times are way off. Your best bet is to pick a major where you could live in base and then go to the competitions regional, ideally in the same base.

Do not depend of plan on flow, unless you have serious background issues such as criminal record, multiple DUI, etc.

Flow can a nice backup, just in case you need it for some reason but by far the fastest path to a particular top tier airline is going to be via their competitor's regionals or LCC majors. They are all seeking to minimize attrition from their own regionals right now.

Exactly. If you go to the regional owned by the major you want to get hired by, they are not inclined to hire outside of flow. That will delay your getting hired by several years. If you go to work for a regional owned by another major, you will get hired faster. They are not afraid to “steal” pilots from the other airline’s regional.

Your impulse to look down the road will generally serve you well, but the state of the industry is so dynamic right now, I don’t know that what we tell you will be the best thing a year from now. Just work on what is in front of you.

Yup... I was in the middle of typing up a similar response when I saw yours. To the OP, your wants/desires/needs will change by the time you are at a point to submit apps. Additionally, as you enter the industry, via either a regional or ULCC, you begin to gain insight into various airlines that could be positive or negative.

PSA talked a little about this, they stated American is going to stop doing this due to the backlog.
Think it’s true?
