Career Progression
Hey guys, can anyone share where I can find an updated master airline retirement list? I realize there’s no crystal ball just trying to get an idea on what my career progression could look like as I debate to keep instructing part time or dive in full time and get the hours. In this market I haven’t seen a need to bust ass to 1500 but at the same time don’t want to be behind when hiring comes back. 39 year old CFI with 700TT. Greatly appreciate any insight!

Click the airline and it shows a somewhat accurate list https://www.airlinepilotcentral.com/airlines/legacy That said, that’s not much of a good thing to base a decision like this off, I’d say if you have doubts, especially at your age, just don’t Ifs not the easiest industry and myself and everyone I know who makes a living flying, there was no hesitation, we were going to do it regardless |

36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Looks like retirements will be significant and steady for many years. If you want your career to progress .. dive in full-time and get the hours. That's the answer. If you have other priorities, then make different choices. But airline hiring tends to come in fits and starts and rewards the ones who are ready today. |

If it is a career you want, the best time to get going on preparation is during the slow times. If you wait until hiring picks back up again to get moving, it is likely you’ll miss it all together. Changing careers is nerve wracking and there is no way to completely remove the risk no matter how well off you are. |
Trying to time the market is funny lol
If someone could actually predict such things they should just become the worlds richest man working the stock market and Vegas then just buy their own personal airliner |

I’ve just got a job currently that pays really well while I CFI part time. I’d like the window of full time CFI to first post CFI job to be smaller while I continue earning there but I hear the sentiment to just dive in and be ready. Thanks |

Well you can sort of time the pilot market, because the retirements are known and the timeline will not change (at least not by more than a couple years).
With that said, there are still decent retirements through the en of the decade. It then tapers off into the mid 2030's. Bottom line, I'd say we're still in a window where a seniority windfall (by historical standards) can be had. Given that, I wouldn't waste any time if you're going to do it. As long as you have a few decades, those retirements will benefit you one way or another... even if there's a big industry downturn now with say a recovery in ten years, the retirements will have created a large void and hiring will go crazy trying to catch up (like post covid). |
