Driving record question
 
I tried to ask this in another thread, but I would like to see what the recruiter has to say.....In 1996, my license was suspended for missing a driver's safety course (after receiving 2 tickets in my first 2 years of driving, which I reported on my app) because I was out of state at college. This was an "Administrative" suspension. On airlineapps, the page specifically says "Criminal Driving History". On that page, it talks about DUI, DWI, etc. Then, under that, it asks if you have ever had your license suspended or revoked. I checked "no", because it was not a "criminal" suspension, and I don't want it to be misconstrued. I would rather explain this in person if they discover it, than have them never call me because my license was suspended for something silly. I am not trying to be deceittful in any way, just don't want to highlight myself in a negative light. It was also in a different state, which I left 8 years ago. I did list every ticket I have ever had, which was 3. Thoughts? Thank you.

I'm not sure if that would show up on your record, but I personally would not take the chance...if they find, you will be fired immediately. I think it would be easier to explain it upfront.

Can you send H.R. an explanation? Worst case scenario is they toss your application.

There is a spot to explain under where you check "yes", but I don't even want to check "yes" because the title of the page is "Criminal Driving Record". I don't have a criminal driving record. So, I am thinking this area for "suspension" is not meant for what I have, more something criminal, like DUI. Just wondering if DAL would agree with me. With all thier apps on file, I don't want to have anything that would cause them to just skip me without ever reading, just because a "yes" was check in a bad area of the app.

I think DAL will agree with you about the character of this issue.

But I also suspect that you need to answer the question LITERALLY. If they asked "have you ever had your license suspended?" the answer would be yes. If you say and they find out otherwise later bad things will happen.

Is there some risk you might get passed over? Maybe, but I think you could explain the situation in the comments area and at least get an opportunity to explain it in person at an interview (if you are otherwise qualified).

Would you rather risk getting not called for an interview, or fired while in ground school?

I've had my license suspended for not paying a ticket on time - I just put yes on all the applications for any job that asked. There was always a space to explain what happened.

You're checking no to the DUI/DWI - and checking yes to the suspension and explaining the situation. Yes, a suspension of any kind is part of a "criminal driving history" (i.e. not abiding by the laws) -

I checked yes, and it's been a non-event for any application.

Listen to Rick and Ryan - they are absolutely, unequivocally right. You MUST check yes to your license being suspended. Like Ryan pointed out, there is a disparity where you checked no to DUI and yes to suspension. This will trigger questions on the topic (if someone checks yes to DUI then there is an assumption that they will check yes to suspension and vice-versa.) You WANT them to ask you about it so you can explain yourself. Write a blurb about it in the comments section on the app but do not say "will explain at interview" - nothing ticks off a recruiter more. Explain the circumstances briefly, saving the complete details for the verbal explanation. You want to remove any question they have of whether or not to proceed with the interview. Don't leave them guessing.

It's very important to note what Rick said - if you leave the box checked "no" and they discover (and they will) that your license was in fact suspended, they have the right to fire you for lying on your application..which is a legal document. Many will exercise that right.... not worth the risk. How would you then explain that termination to other employers?
