Default 121 10 yr. vs. 135 Background Check

I plan on pursuing 135 employment once I reach the minimum flight times, and I estimate that to take 1-2 years. Are the criminal background checks at a freight company like AMF the same as a 121 pax carrier? Is the standard time period going to be previous ten years?

Thanks in advance for the information!

I don't think there is a federal requirement for 135 background checks, the TSA 121 background checks apply to ALL employees who have access to 121 aircraft and is designed to protect pax and prevent another 9/11.

With that said many 135 operations do a background check, but since it is not a federal check they will not have access to all of the same things. I think this would be more like the background check at a regular non-aviation job.

To my knowledge, no they aren't the same. Part of the background check for 121 is to ensure that you can acquire a SIDA badge (unescorted access to secure airport areas.) Most 135 operations don't access these areas. If the 135 operation has any government contracts then they may be able to obtain the same FBI record as the airlines.

Let me clarify....full-time non-aviation job. It's been a couple of years since I've had a FT offer due to my background, however, hopefully this will serve as a foundation for better things to come.

In addition, met with Aftercare counselor yesterday. He informed me that his recommendation to HIMS physicians..."Medically certify him and roll him into the HIMS program. Monitor him for a few years and if he 'keeps his nose clean', issue the unrestricted medical. For now, allow him to get started so that he can move on".

I'll keep everyone posted!

Whether or not you need a 10 year CHRC is determined by whether or not you are subject to a full security program issued by TSA. If you work for a cargo carrier, you're background vetting requirements are defined in a document called the FACAOSSP, passenger carrier, AOSSP.

Some 135 companies apply for TSA issued security programs and are issued them, such as what's known as a 12-5 program. They need a full security program to operate in a SIDA.

Some 135 operators are at airports that are entirely SIDA which would require a SIDA badge based on a 10 year CHRC and is no different from the vetting for a 121 pilot.

TSA SSPs are SSI but for further guidance se CFR 1542 and 1544.
