Felony conviction

if you have an felony conviction can you still get a job with the airlines or corprate? like my buddy got an grand theft conviction at 19 yrs old. hes 24 yrs old now and is an CFI, has an A.S degree, and has 5 more years before he would be able to get that SIDA badge which is holding him back now. but 5 yrs from now with probably an BS degree with all his ratings, ATP, and thousand of hours, do you think someone out there will look over that convictions ten years later, with not even a speeding ticket? do he have a shot even to the regionals?

My guess is not likely at the airlines unless the state of the industry changes dramatically. Airline employers are pretty tolerant of youthful indiscretions on the part of pilot applicants...peeing in public, drunk in public, underage drinking, etc.

But that is all relatively harmless stuff...when you start getting into crimes which have victims (DUI, theft, assault, etc) airlines are about 100% intolerant.

The one shot this guy has is to go 91/135/corporate and work his way up. His history will exclude him from the better corporate and 135 jobs too, but he should be able to get something. Since this incident occurred at a young age he MIGHT be able to overcome it after a long stretch (15-20 years?) of clean living and safe flying. Maybe, it's just hard to say.

It would be better if he had been 14 when it happened...but 19 = adult. Bottom line, this is a very serious thing to have on your record.

knowing someone

my buddy just got hire with fractional corporate job with a felony record, flying piaggio and phenom 300/100's. the HR lady really love him, but he was vouched by a guy who had a weed charge himself, and I was told he is a hellva pilot and his personality was great! nowdays, is it really who you know and what you know? and if he has a felony how is he flying part 91/ 135? dont you need a SIDA badge?

Background check

after ten years of being clean how do the airlines look at your background when it comes down to felonies and/or misdemeanors? and what if you got a charge and never been convicted? (Withheld adjudication) does that mean anything? And does the airline application ask "have you ever been convicted" or "have you ever been convicted in the last tens years"?

I never needed one for Part 91 or 135. That's not airlines. SIDA (security indentification display area) is for flight crew and service personnel working for 121 airlines at passenger terminals. I would venture a guess all Part 121 ops including small ones serving tiny airports require SIDA compliance, because even if those flights serve feeder airports the feeders would have to be secured as well. But if you are not 121 you do not need a SIDA clearance.

91/135 vs 121 background

do 91/135 requires a ten year background check like the airlines? and do 91/135 need SIDA badge? so someone with an oops on there record have a better chance flying 91/135 then 121?

edavis -

There is always someone with a story of a person they know who has "beat the odds' and gotten a job when most others would be excluded. If you are looking for a definitive answer - there isn't one.

Your buddy who just got a job flying P180s with a fractional.......I'm surprised. Isn't Avantair the only fractional in the US flying P180s? With what I have been reading on these boards about how hard it is to get a job there, I'm be very surprised.

Also - is this the same budy who had the felony mentioned in your first post or is this another buddy with a felony conviction?

I think he's asking about pilot jobs but I could be wrong. I looked through the regs and it seems like "scheduled" is the operative word for whether or not an airport needs a SIDA program. If your airport handles any scheduled flights, that would qualify in most cases. Do they have anything like that coming in there? It should be mentioned that even scheduled airports can have non-SIDA zones if they separate them properly though so he should ask the individual company he wants to work for if they comply with SIDA rules.

The SIDA badge is only required for access to certain secure airport areas. I think this only applies to areas which handle 121 operations, but not certain.

135/91 employees do not automatically need a SIA, it depends on where they operate. Some 135 do need a SIDA if they happen to operate out of secure areas. Some 91 might also be in the same boat but I think you could find a 135/91 job that does not require a SIDA. You will probably be looking at smaller charter operations, the night freight guys probably go to enough larger airports that they might need a SIDA. Check out their web site, it should have that info.
