Typical interview question...how to answer?
"Tell us about yourself."
This one seems to come up quite a bit. I was wondering what is the best way to answer this? Are the interviewers looking for a desription of your personality (i.e. "motivated, hard working, etc."), or maybe more about your flying background (where you did your training, ratings, etc.). Do they want to start from your childhood, and detail your upbringing, including hobbies, etc.? Anyway, I'm sure there is no right or wrong way to answer this, but was wondering what would be the best approach to take?
Thanks!

It's not a trick question. Tell us something about yourself...
What the interviewers are trying to determine in a short snapshot isn't your life history, or even where you went to school or have worked. Really, we're trying to figure out if you are the type of person that we can tolerate flying with for a month straight (or longer depending on the operation).
Don't drone on (come up with a 1 minute answer), but give us some little tidbit about why you're better than the rest of the applicants and an interesting person (without going too over board or being too egoistic/self centered).

Great, thanks for the good information!
The other one that comes up a lot is, "What are some of your negative traits?" What are some good examples of how to answer this, and possibly turn these negatives into positives?

With regard to "Tell us about yourself" - My advice is to tell them something that is not on your resume. Allow them to get to know you.
As far as "negative traits" - these are weaknesses. Try to find something that is not relevant to the position you are applying for. If you tell them you're always late wherever you go it could be interpreted that you will be late in the job function too... not a good thing with this job.
You can't "spin" negative into a positive - I personally hate that term - but you can certainly learn from negative things in your past. That learning experience makes you better.
