Default NEW Weight & Height Restrictions question

This is opposite to the thread below... I'm just wondering if some pilots are not hired because of Weight and Height - I am about 6'3, 250.... I'm working on bringing my weight down a bit to about 220ish.... so will i still be able to get hired? I'm pretty broad aswell.

Wow, I bet that was crouded in a 172. Hope for your sake you are small.

FWIW, I had a flight instructor (multi engine) that was about 6' or maybe 6'2 and at least 270, probably over 300. He has interviewed at Horizon (failed tech) but is flying 135 cargo and is planning on going to the majors. I don't think that it is holding him back (but ya never know).

I fly an air ambulance. I know what you are thinking: hot nurses! WRONG! The females average 5'4" and 215 lbs. Can make for some interesting weight and balance calculations in a C421.

I fly for a regional currently (ERJ-145). I am 5'10 and 250. Yeah...I'm working on brining it down...but it wasn't a problem. I had one guy in my newhire class who is 6'2 and probably 310.

I think the bigger concern is not what you weigh, its how you carry it. You may weigh 250, but are you fit and athletic?- can you get in and out of the emergency exits and fullfil your job requirements? The bigger concern- from the hiring viewpoint may be- will this guy be able to stay healthy and keep a first class medical? Most airliner cockpits are roomy (not so much for a CRJ... but normally...) so there is some room for the bigger guys. I have seen some pilots that do make me wonder though...

Default Majors

The hard part will be making the jump to the majors. I can't recall ever seeing an Alaska Airlines pilot who was under 40 and wasn't a twig. All the rest of the better majors like FedEx, UPS and SWA also seem to exclusively hire slim types.

I am NOT saying you are wrong, but I will say I have met quite a few fedex guys- many of which were far from "in shape"- unless you consider "round" a shape..hehe

Not to hijack the thread- but could the cargo/people factor matter when dealing with fedex/ups compared to the passenger carriers? With all the hype on a "professional" look I could see the passenger carriers looking at this- but boxes may not get the same consideration?- Just a thought/question...

Sure there are tons of fat airline pilots, but I don't think they were that way on interview day.

Spot on. What's your body fat percentage? Can you not see your toes or can you bench 500 lbs? How you look in your uniform when you go for the interview is critical.
