Chief Pilot name withheld
 

I contacted a local charter company to verify they’d received my résumé.
The receptionist informed me the CP was unavailable and she would take my name & number so the CP could call me later.

When I asked the receptionist if I could inquire as to the name of the CP so I know who would be calling me, she’d replied, “I’m not allowed to give that name out.”

Seriously, NOT ALLOWED? What, is the CP some kind of TOP SECRET AGENT of the CIA?

I told her never mind…

He probably gets a lot of unsolicited phone calls from unemployed pilots.

Or maybe they actually do charter out for CIA ops...

The only person you hurt with that attitude is yourself... Especially if you base your decision on one discussion with a receptionist.

Does this mean that you'll also skip apply for jobs where the employer/company name is withheld by a headhunting company?

Sounds like you are the one with the attitude, and if you want to get anywhere in this field you better check than thing at the door.

I disagree. I don't see this as an attitude issue. I see it as an issue of an expectation of professional and respectful treatment. That is something that these small shops are not exactly full of. Yes, they do have a lot of low time ("eager") applicants and yes, I'm sure they get a lot of calls. So what? What does that mean in terms of dealing with people? All I saw from these places is a certain "Napoleonic complex". These were offices that were one step up from trailers but their treatment of people, walking in with their hat in their hand, was nothing short of trailer. Sorry, that was my experience and I wasn't the only one, I assure you.

Let's take this case here. They feel that he's good enough to have a phone interview with the CP but not good enough to learn his name? I mean... are you serious? What other industry does this? In what other industry, even in a buyers market, do you see this attitude?

So how would the phone interview go if the CP didn't give out his name? "OK, just call me Gus".

Perhaps the problem is that too many people "check it in at the door" and encourage this kind of treatment.

I don't see anywhere in the original post that it says there was a phone interview. The OP stated that he called to verify they had received his resume and the receptionist took down the message and relevant information so that the CP could call back and let the OP know whether or not the resume was received.

Withholding the CP's name prevents people in similar situations (or telemarketers) from calling in and navigating the phone tree to call the CP directly and catching them off guard. This way the CP has time to actually pull out the resume, look it over and call you back and not only verify the resume was received but probably give you an answer on if they want to interview you or not.

You gain nothing by giving them attitude back (especially based on what a receptionist says) except eliminating a job oppurtunity for yourself. I would have simply said thank you and waited to hear from the CP before jumping to a conclusion about the whole operation. Maybe they are a terrible place to work, then again maybe they just have a bad receptionist or have had issues in the past with giving out names of management personnel.

Agreed, you have some valid points and, yes, we don't know the whole story.
The overview presented though did ring some bells.
I don't recommend nor condone responding in kind to unprofessionalism or poor social skills but I don't recommend puting up with them either.

It seems the op closed the door on this opportunity prematurely. What did he really know about this operation? A talk with the cp may have changed his whole outlook, now he'll never know.
