Background and Medical Certs.
So I am planning on starting the "pilot journey" and am trying to get my ducks in a row. Regarding both the background checks and med certs, can I apply for those and do them BEFORE I start school? I would hate to continue through getting my degree from ERAU (and accruing tons of loans) just to be denied a med cert or background check. I don't start ERAU for another year, can do get all my clearances NOW before I move to FL?
BTW, my goal is to one day fly for the majors. My background is fairly clean, some dumd kid stuff and a bounced check. I also filed bankruptcy about 6 ears ago (don't know if that matters).

As far as you medical goes, your flight instructor will guide you through the process, it's not a big deal and you won't need it until you solo. For planning purposes, go to a GP and get a checkup. As long as you can hear, are correctable to 20-20, aren't diabetic or color blind, have normal blood pressure, you should be good to go.
For your background check, there are no clearances to obtain, when your future employer hires you, they will send your prints to the FBI to check for criminal offenses. The list of disqualifying crimes can be found at: § 1542.209 Fingerprint-based criminal history records checks (CHRC). :: PART 1542--AIRPORT SECURITY :: CHAPTER XII--TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION, DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY :: Title 49 - Transportation :: Code of Federal Regulations
Juvenile convictions cannot legally be held against you but an employer may use a stricter standard than the law calls for. A bankruptcy will not hurt but a pattern of bad credit will turn off an employer, as will a recent pattern of motor vehicle offenses.
They will also forward your biographical data to the TSA for a Security Threat Assessment (STA) and compare it to terrorist and immigration watch lists.
Nothing more you can do except write big checks to the flight school.
Good luck.

AOPA helped me get through the first medical once on BP meds. YMMV

BP controlled by Lisnopril is not a Secial Issuance, as I understand it. I had to have a 3- day series of BP checks, blood work up and a letter from my doc in a format outlined on the FAA CAMI website. Never has delayed my Class 1.
The the OP, are you sure? Might read thru the forums for a couple of rainy days, first.

James... I plan on doing the same thing. Starting INSANITY this week. Once I get it strightened out and come off the meds, will the FAA know that I used to have an issue? Or if I am good should I just keep my mouth shut and not bring it up?
