Banner Towing Questions
I'm currently in college and due to graduate in May. I'm almost done with my instrument rating and i'm also working on my commercial license also thinking about getting my tailwheel. I'll probably have around 300 hours after i get my commercial license. My questions are about banner towing are:
Is there any decent places that hire fresh commercial pilots?
Whats the pay like?
What kind of planes do most of them fly?
Thanks in advance for any information.

Cubs,Pawnees, Citabrias, 172s even. pay is crappy, flying is boring, but relaxing (picking up the banners is fun). There is a place out of KBLM that does it. They had J-3 Supercubs with extended wings, basically the airplane was airborne before you could go max throttle, it was AWESOME.

I make $20/hr towing the rags for 2 small companies. Getting a raise this summer to $30/hr. I hear Van Wagner is a good company. They'll start you with at least $20/hr, and provide housing. I also hear Paramount is pretty good too; they'll throw you in college dorms for the summer.

Van Wagner requires you to have a commercial rating and tail-wheel endorsement with at least 15 - 20 hours. The more time in tail-wheel, the better. And actually yes, my boss is looking for another pilot for the season. But..,unless you are local to the MA/RI area then I would say its not worth it. We only fly on the weekends primarily (about 15 hours a weekend). He is providing weekend overnight accommodations. But if you are interested PM me, and I can give you the details. You would probably want another job during the week also.

I used to work for Van Wager. They are an awesome company to work for. You start at $20/hr in the FL area, and if you get to go out to another station, you be paid $40/hr. Plus they take care of paying for housing, you also get a company card. the planes are very well maintained, I never had any problems. Great group of guys as well. I would go back and work for them again anytime.
If you have anymore questions about them PM me.

There's a pretty big operation out of Myrtle Beach. I never worked for them, but I know three or four guys who have and they all loved it. I think the pay was pretty awful but they put like 400 hours in their logbooks in one summer. I think the guy who runs it also likes pilots who come back each summer.
Also, check climbto350. Around this time of year the summer operators usually start advertising.
