How can there be a "pilot shortage" when the junior Captain at Mesa was hired in 2003? I was there from 1995-2000 and it was a 16 month upgrade at the time.
In regards to working there, I think that you might be happier at Skywest. It sure doesn't sound like management had changed their tune in the past 15 years.

Thanks for the info guys. Seems like some Mesa guys don't mind it there and others absolutely hate it there... Has to be better than RAH right? And only reason I was thinking the upgrade time would be quick is I had heard their pilot group is planned to grow like sixty percent and I'd think there would be plenty of people moving on, captains and fo's.

2. Never "bare back" an FA you don't plan to marry.
Follow these 2 rules and you should be okay in your airline adventure.

Living on the west coast I would stay away from RAH. Most of their junior bases are east coast or mid-west, and outstations. You'll never see your family with 11 days off per month and commuting on most of them. Do you have the quals for a major? If you have to go to a regional, I'd wait for Skywest to call. If you have the mins, they will call. Give it some time.

I'm a 3 year FO at ExpressJet based out of Chicago. You will not like it here. MCI is a very small base and uncommutable (last flight in and first flight out). Morale is extremely low as evidenced by the recent rejection of our TA by 83% (which is unheard of). I don't think I will ever upgrade at this company. We are losing a pilot a day to attrition and yet seniority will be stagnant at best. If we sign a new contract we lose a lot of airplanes (I think about 100 in 2 years???). If we don't sign a contract we lose a lot of airplanes. We are a dying company. Skywest is going to kill us and take whatever is left over to their side. Just go there and avoid this mess.

I forgot you said you can't go to Skywest. Reapply there when able they will be getting desperate for FO's as all regionals will. If not, I think Mesa is better simply because of the commute. XJT is no longer a company of preference to work for... I assume it is about the same as any other regional (though the Republic family may still have the worst contracts). My 2 pennies. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I flew at Mesa. If you know what you are getting into it is not bad. They have nothing, but maybe a quick upgrade. All the above is true. Hard schedules, intimidation, unless you know EVERY FAR and company rule. You are the dispatcher, ramper, mechanic, and pilot. I might would try somewhere else. Little more stable.

So make the best of it at Mesa, and move on. Others will, if you don't. You can enjoy the nicer environment at a place like Skywest, but you may be there longer than planned.
