Freight Pilot Living

Hi all,

I am considering flying freight instead of taking the CFI path to build hours. One of the major concerns I have is relocation: if you have to relocate, but you make such a small salary, what kind of place would you generally live in? It seems like it would be an incredible challenge to eat AND pay for an apartment.

I have also heard about some people living wherever they currently live and just commuting to their base. Is this generally a better choice than relocating, provided you have a choice?

Any advice people can give would be very much appreciate.

Thanks!

Do you have IFR 135 mins ?

Haegon 01-16-2014 06:30 AM

I do not yet - but that brings up another question. The min requirements for AirNet is Commercial & IFR ratings w/ 250 TT. The Part 135 minimums are, and please correct me if I am wrong, 1200 TT, 500 XC, 100 Night hours, 75 hours of Instrument.

I am aiming to fly for AirNet, so I don't understand how the 135 IFR mins affect AirNet...

They used to have an sic program but I believe it has been scrapped. So the 1200 hour mins would be the min for PIC.

According to the AirNet recruitment recording, the SIC program still exists. I am going to call back later and confirm through a recruiter. I am still curious about the living conditions of a freight pilot, if anyone wants to chime in on that. :)

I do not know how you would commute? Unless you drive do they have a jump seat agreement? And if you do then you might need a crash pad. Could cost more than moving. when I built time I moved to the job. If it did not fit in my pick up truck it did not go. But I went to jobs that would fly me a lot and built time fast that way.
