Should I join the Air Force?
 

I am unsure if I should or not. I have heard that they will pay for teaching you to fly. Is this true? I have also heard that they pay better than a job like a flight instructor. What do you think would it be best to join the airforce or be a flight instructor to gain hours?

They pay you to be an officer in the United States Air Force.

Vastly different roads.

Yes the air force (or any military branch) will pay far, far better for at least the first ten years of your career than any conceivable civilian path would. But it's a whole different level of commitment and effort required.

That said, you'll be a better person and pilot and be money ahead if you go the military route...assuming you have the commitment, aptitude, and pass all the screening.

Yes this is true, however the Navy can teach you to operate ships and even fly planes off ships; the Air Force is not that advanced yet.

You have to want to serve, if you only want to join the air force to get free hours, you will never be selected by the board.

It is a ten year commitment to fly for the air force, you pay with service, not money.

And it's more like 12 years in by the time you can get out. Not a good way to build hours.

It's the best choice I ever made. The Air Force will allow you to learn aviation. But as was said...if you don't get that you are joining the MILITARY rethink the strategy. This means you are willing to take your aircraft or go on a deployment that puts you in harms way. It does not mean you will, but think about that real carefully. Moreover, you will be an officer IF they accept you. This means a great of extra duty work outside of being a pilot. The money is awesome and so is the training. The question for you is do you value having skills other than aviation or are you absolutely certain all you want to do is fly and not put up with the extra duty that can be a pain at times. In that case FBO instructor is probably a better route. Good luck !
