Traditionally public health did not use death numbers as a primary metric because in the end EVERYBODY DIES. They use a metric of years of potential life lost (YPLL),
The rationale is that resources spent to save a 16 year old - who has a life expectancy of another 64 years - are better spent than the same resources being spent on an 80 year old who has a life expectancy of maybe 84 years. By that metric, the Spanish Flu, which disproportionately affected Young healthy twenty and thirty-something’s, was far more serious than COVID - 19, which disproportionately affects people living in nursing homes and long term care facility residents |

Pilot shortage still expected after the pandemic. I could certainly believe it for foriegn airlines, if not so much in the US.
