Exclamation ATP Written & August 1st, 2014

I am a commercial-instrument helicopter pilot with a private ASEL rating. I am working on finishing my commercial add-ons right now, but due to work and timing I am unsure if I will be able to finish before August. The reason I bring this is up is because I'd like to take my ATP written before the new rules goes into effect.

Here's my question: without having a commercial ASEL/AMEL complete, is there anything barring me from taking the written for the ATP?

I am a military trained pilot and it is my intent to take the checkride for my R-ATP before my written expires.

The only requirements for the ATP written are that you be 21, have photo ID and can pay the testing fee.

I am too lazy to look up the requirement, but it should be 19 years old as one can apply the apt written towards a restricted ATP within 2 years.

The requirements for the R-ATP vary, but the age minimum is 21, therefore people who are 19 now should be able to take the ATP written.

If you take the ATP written before July 31, 2014, you are grandfathered in under the old ATP requirements and checkride (test is good for 24 calendar months like every other written). No need for a R-ATP checkride; in fact I doubt you will be able to take an R-ATP if you have a valid ATP written from before 8/1/2014. You would have to take the old ride or wait to take the new ATP written to be able to take the R-ATP checkride you speak of.

As Twin Wasp said, the age is 21. Ref: 61.53(b).

I didn't realize their was a special regulation written for those specific circumstances!

Is there a difference between R-ATP and ATP check-ride. I was under the impression they were the same check, it's just a matter of meeting the requirements.

So if you're grandfathered into "the old ATP written exam," you're bound by the old aeronautical experience requirements? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but how could this be since R-ATP has been in effect since last year? Moreover, the R-ATP is the same ride as the unrestricted ATP... it's just the privileges that are different.

I wouldn't be surprised by anything (gubberment, sheesh), but I want to know your source / where you're coming to that conclusion.

61.153(f) says you have to meet the aeronautical experience requirements listed in .159 or .160. In the OP's case, be a rated military pilot with 750+ hours. 61.153(g) says you have to have passed the written. There's nothing in .160 that says these requirements only apply to pilots who have done the ATP training program and passed the written.

61.35(b)...... little dyslexic last night.

Re: Twin Wasp
Interesting. As far as I've been told, if you take the old written you don't need the new program to take the ride (Level C/D sim, ground school, etc). Are we saying the same thing?

Yes, we are. It looks like there will be a 24 month window starting this July where the "old" written will get you the ATP or ATP-R. I think that is one reason you can't extend the "old" written with air carrier employment. They wanted to be fair to someone who may have passed the written 6 months ago. But they didn't want a herd of pilots taking their ATP ride 5 years from now who had not completed the ATP training program. That's why I've been telling anyone who asked that they should take the ATP written in the next couple months if they have any chance of hitting (any) ATP mins in the next 26 months.
