Airline Pilot and Kids?

Hello,

I'm an aspiring airline pilot and my boyfriend is also an aspiring airline pilot. I've always wanted to be a pilot, but now I'm concerned with the stress it could put on my future family. Is it possible to have a stable family life/kids while working as an airline pilot?

Thanks!

Simply finding stability as an airline pilot can be difficult...This (like most things) becomes even more difficult with a family, and can be an even larger struggle if both partners are in aviation.

I wouldn't dismiss your pursuit of aviation however because of the potential that it will be difficult on the rest of your family life. If flying is something you have a passion for, you should pursue it to the fullest extent. When the time arrives to decide on a career path with a potential life partner, make the decision.

A set of good friends are both in aviation. They both graduated around the same time, flight instructed together, and joined the same airline. After five years, upgrades, downgrades, and base reassignments one of them left the airlines and took a job with Flight Safety as an Sim Instructor, the other is still employed with the airline but now is working in the training department. They found a way to remain very involved with aviation, have decent salaries, and promote a successful work/life balance.

Anything is possible. There are quite a few married couples with kids at Alaska. Having family close helps a ton or plan on getting a nanny. If you are both at mainline when you have kids you'll be able to afford help. It won't be the easiest path but it's 100% doable if you want to make it happen.

Uh, ANYTHING is POSSIBLE, pink elephants might fly tomorrow. But a component of the OP question was "stable"

Now, again, yes you can pop kids out and now you have per Webster, a "family." However you might ask the kids of airline pilots on how "stable" their upbringing was, with two airline pilot parents.

My two cents of course, just an opinion...

This question (well avey similar question anyway) was just asked last month. She got quite a few responses, positive and negative. Check out the thread here:

I hope you get your answer! Good Luck!

I read the question and I stick by my answer. Here at Alaska Airlines we have a few married couples with kids and I would say they have a stable family life. I know thinking outside the box must be difficult for you but if you want to have a family and be in aviation it is possible.

Not difficult for me to think out of box, however prior to trying to scold others, use spell check

but it is "here" not "hear"

may the force be with you
