Suit for interview
I was recently told that there is a strict certain suit that should be worn for an interview. I believe that it was a dark blue suit, red tie, and white shirt. Is this what everyone wears? Is a black suit a big no-no? I understand that a purple shirt or something is a bad idea, but I didn't know that there was a certain "correct" interview attire. I have never heard this before, so I want to check my source.

It's been a while since we did this show, but it's still relevant:

However you could probably wear bermudas and flip-flos to a mesa interview and still get hired if you are technically qualified. |
I have an interview in a few days and they told me that dress is business casual what is the appropriate thing to wear??? Should I still go with a suit or dress down a little bit.

As a general rule, unless it is otherwise specified, wear a conservative dark colored suit and tie. No funny colors... black, blue, really dark grey- they all will work, but you want to present a professional and conservative look.
If they specify business casual, I'd personally wear nice slacks and a button down collared shirt without a tie, but possibly a sport coat, depending on the corporate culture at the company (if you know it). As for the briefcase/backpack/whatever, I've always been fond of keeping it simple and low key. I take a notebook sized (9"x12") executive leather portfolio with a notepad, a nice pen, and several copies of my resume/supporting documents inside. My logbook is an electronic printout that is also in a leather bound 3 ring binder. That's all I carry into the building. Leave everything else in the car (including your phone!). Good luck! |
Thanks for the help guys.

Purple crushed velvet suit with a big collar and red silk shirt. Shoes should definitely be of the platform with goldfish in the heals type and don't forget the pimp cane and a fedora to make a nice touch.
|
Purple crushed velvet is so out! Yellow is the new "power" color:

Oh yeah, did one of these @ Airnet, and one of the other guys wore a Tie, I thought Craig Washka was going to start a crazy fit about him wearing that tie! |
Keep that pimp hand strong.

For a two day interview can you just wear the same thing both days or should I wear black one day and blue the next, or just wear blue both days and switch the tie. I'm overthinking it I know, I'm just really nervous and I want everything to go perfect.

I'd say new shirt and tie on day two...if you're being interviewed by guys no one will notice. Women probably will. |
i wore a yellow tie and still got hired at places before

One of the reasons to wear blue is that is the color of most uniforms. However, if the uniform is known to be black, it wouldn't be bad to wear. The idea is to help them picture you as one of their own.
Brown suit to UPS?! MMMMMmmmm......no. :-) |
I've always wondered why specific colors are considered standard. Is a red tie versus a blue tie or black suit versus blue suit really that big a deal? While there have been jokes here, I really question the validity of standard colors. Would this really matter if you're well groomed and wearing a nicely tailored, professional-looking (conservative) suit?

No. See. That was easy. :) There is talk about a red tie being a "power" color, and gold being a conservative or thoughtful color. Dark color ties often are regarded as somber. Ya, whatever. Just be sure that when you look at yourself in the mirror, you say, "Danm, I look good!" You'll feel better about yourself. TIP If you are not comfortable wearing a suit, wear it to some lunches or otherwise around town running errands. You don't want to be getting used to it at the interview! NEVER WEAR BRAND NEW SHOES TO THE INTERVIEW! THEY'LL HURT YOUR FEET!!! But they must, must, MUST be well shined!!!!!!!! It will do you NO good to have a spiffy suit and tie and $hitty shoes! Are you going to button your jacket when you stand up? THINK about those kinds of things before hand!!! |
There is an established "Range" of appropriate attire for an Airline interview. To put it bluntly its not burger king. A doctor or lawyer would not walk into a form and show up wearing khakis and a polo because that is not the well know industry standard. The responsibility and demeanor of this profession has set a standard, and they uphold it, we all uphold it so that both employer and employee realize that this is not burger king.
There are always exceptions; you will here people say they wore an orange tie and blue suit while still getting hired, who knows. All that may be true but is it likely, probably not. It’s ok to stand out but just make sure if you go outside the norm you are personally ok with it and can deal with any additional attention you may get. Good Luck If you are interested here is a look at the norm http://airlinepilotmentor.com/airlineinterviews.aspx |
I wore a blue suit, brown tie, brown socks, and brown dress shoes to my interview at UPS. I also wore a bright orange shirt and during the interview I was asked by Capt. Kahallen during the HR portion, " Did you wear that orange shirt because you knew Buz Thompson likes the Tennessee Vols college football team" ... MY answer..."Go Volunteers !"
Best of Luck, no matter what you wear...first impressions are the key ! |
I need to get some spiffy shoes. I got a great suit two years ago at a Robinsons May closing sale or something...it was a $450 suit, marked down to $150.
|
What is "company casual?" Is that the same thing as busines casual?
|
Blue Jean suit with a white undershirt, polished cowboy boots, and a nice cowboy hat did it for me. They hired me on the spot. Oh wait, is this for an airline interview???:D
|
I'd go with this outfit.
Seriously, just look professional... my suit was charcoal grey with a blue shirt and tie. And apparently I looked okay, because I got hired. If I can look good, ANYBODY can look good.... |
The "experts" used to recommend a book "Dress For Sucess" by John T. Molloy. I think that it is still floating out there in the used book section. It was an interesting read, since I'm a typical fashion nightmare. It even covered the business casual do's and don'ts.
