Have you ever failed a check ride?

If FAA purges this info after 60 days, why would airlines ask this question?

It will still be on your training records when they are sent to your new employer.

Maybe the interviewers are just looking to see how you would respond to such a question and how honest you are about any failures. A look into your logbook and any failures are quickly revealed (although purged by the FAA) since there would be an additional "retest" sign-off by your instructor which uses different wording from the original sign-off.

Remember, Lt. Col Holland went 52-0 on checkrides before he killed everyone on board his BUFF at Fairchild.

If you failed a ride, what did you learn from it? Be honest, next question.

Yes, I've failed a couple rides and learned something every time.

Haven't failed one yet (knock on wood) but I have another one today. Wish some luck this way. hehe.

Guess I spoke too soon...busted the ride today - multi IFR.

Don't feel too bad. There are several people at airlines, including FedEx who have failed checkrides. It all depends on what you learned from the experience, and how you use that in the future.

Study hard for the next one, and you'll do fine. Good luck! :D

I was told by one instructor that I would probably never get hired by an airline because I failed my Private Pilot written exam the first time... He strongly enocuraged me to get out of aviation.

I wonder what he is up to these days?

He's probably a bitter instructor at a regional...

As for failures- I've busted both an oral and a practical (different ratings). Blew my CFI oral and then later missed on my First Officer initial ride. Know what? Didn't make a difference in landing any jobs... just answer questions honestly and show that you've learned your lesson.
