Suit/Tie Combo for Job Fair/Interview
All,
I'm going to the fapa.aero/MOAA conference this month; however as I am current military my wardrobe is thin (mostly green suits with zippers!). I have a custom fit dark suit and a fitted white shirt, but as for ties all I'm looking at is a thin black tie. Should I go get a standard size black tie, blue tie, or red tie? Does it matter either way? I'd also like to be set in case I am called for an interview. Any advice is welcome. Thank you!!!

Concur. You're not interviewing for Men-In-Black or to be a G-man! Or a role in the newest "Blues Brothers" movie.
A dark suit is good, but if it's solid black also you might want to rethink that. Dark grey or dark navy blue (solids not pinstripes) seem to be the best suits for the airline interview. Black is okay but in my opinion looks a little too cold and somber. Brown is also a lesser choice than dark grey or navy.
Go to a nice men's wear store or department store and have the salesperson help you pick out a very nice silk tie to go with the suit. (Take the jacket along as shades of color do make a difference in expertly matching a tie.) Generally, solids are better than busy prints. (Busy patterns are a definite no-no ... you don't want to look 'flashy'). But a tie with a little conservative pattern to it looks better than a simple solid. You want to show a hint of personality, good fashion sense, yet erring towards the conservative end of the spectrum.
