College and flight school helpp
 

Hello I'm in my last year of high school and its time for me to make a plan quick and I need advice and any tips I can get since I want to become an airline pilot and be in a regional after college. So I've been looking into FIU (4yr degree) which is in Miami and get a degree in something useful since many say an aviation related degree is useless, and and the same time get my ratings little by little so when I finish college I have all my ratings plus cfis and hopefully my 1500 hrs done. So I can head to a regional after college. I am planning to get my ratings at different schools around, based on price ranges(the estimate cost for every rating comes up to around 33k). And I'm going to try to get my ppl this year if I get a job hopefully. Any tips on how am I going to pay for flight school (no worries for college tuition pretty sure I'll get enough Aid and scholarships) and fit a job. Has anyone done college and flight school at the same time? So u get the idea and tips, ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Four years is a lot of time to just pay as you go for the flight lessons, provided you plan on working during school, that is. What are you going to major in? (Not necessary to know this yet)

Yes I certainly plan to work while in college atleast a part time since I can't depend on my parents after I head off. The instrument rating im sure I can save up and earn it if I work and save but for the Commercial license it's around 14k and that includes the 250 hours time build (PTC in Miami). Do you think taking a bank loan for that rating is reasonable? Since that school that has the cheapest Commercial rating and doesnt have financing. and first of all do u think I should just save up the whole school year and do my ratings during summer or just do it little by little? Oh and I plan to major in something simple such as accounting or something in that area, something I can fall back on just in case you know. Thanks.

From someone who has a degree in Finance, Accounting at the professional level is one of the furthest things from simple or easy.

Well I'm still doing research on the degree part, mostly concentrating on the Flying aspect since that is my real goal.

What about a major in Economics? Im aiming at finishing my major here and moving to the US to get my master degree while logging some more flight hourse.
Is a major in Economics or a master in an area related to that useful in the airline industry?

Your college major isn't very important for getting an airline job, but it can be very important if you don't get one, or are furloughed, lose your medical, etc.
Every pilot should be prepared to divert to an "alternate". :)

That's true, but my mom want to me to go to a univ and I've worked way to hard these years not to lol

I'm in a similar situation. I work in management at my job 40+ hours a week, just started on an aviation degree, found a great part 61 school that works with my schedule (and has SkyWest begging for CFIs to come over when they can, if I might add), and I have a family of 3. I'm on track to have my CFI done in about 1.5 years total.

I'm doing BS Aviation Science degree and have found that it only helps with my training and understanding of the industry. I don't see why anyone would say that it is a useless degree.
