Timing your resignation
 

I'm sure a lot of pilots are running into this same situation, but after searching and reading through the forums, I haven't really found the answer I am looking for.

I was recently hired by an airline and I am currently in the middle of training. I just received a class date from a major airline that starts a week after my scheduled checkride. My concern is that as soon as my current airline receives the PRIA request (which will be in the middle of my sim training) they will not want to waste time finishing out my training and fire me on the spot and create a incomplete training mark on my record.

Can the airline wait to send the PRIA request til just a few days before starting indoc?

I understand I can request a later class date, but is it really worth giving up the seniority number in order to give the "appropriate" two week notice to my current employer right after completing training?

Absolutely do not request a later class date and lose seniority. Odds are your current airline will continue to train you, simply because of sim scheduling especially if you have another student along side you. If you just have a seat filler the whole time, they might let you out of it. All that said, you may want to consider trying to get out of training, even if it costs you a little pay. You won't win any medals for acing a ride, but there could be complications if you don't. There isn't an "incomplete mark" anyway, but even if there was, it would be infinitely better than a ride issue.

My guess they will keep everything the same. If they pull you off, they will have to find someone to fill in for your training partner. I was schedule to take my PC the last week of the month, even though it was my last week at the company. They still made me do it.

Have you discussed your situation with your C/P? Transparency and honestly can't hurt.

What airline are you going to/from?

I haven't talk to the CP yet. Kinda wanted an idea of what may happen when I do talk to him about the situation.

I work for an ACMI carrier and going to Alaska Airlines.

I'm not in the airlines, so I cant comment on sims, however I am in a very competitive career with training dates. As far as what to expect from the c/p, I would expect some choice words to come out of his mouth. He won't be happy, seeing as they filled a slot with a candidate that will no longer be with them, thereby leaving a hole in their ranks that they will have to wait to fill. They've also wasted resources that they can't recoupe.

They'll get over it though. It will be fine. Just tske the lumps and move on. You gotta do whats best for you! Good luck at Alaska!

You are not under obligation to complete training. If you are confident about your class date, give your notice and depart. The airline may choose to stop your training but it should not go against you by any means since it was due to a job offer and not a training issue. They may actually appreciate you leaving before utilizing simulator time for a job you won't be around for in two weeks. You also risk a jeopardy event with your current airline if you stay in training which may affect your prospective position?

I was in a similar situation a few years ago and chose to leave right after G/S but before starting sims. It was a non issue then and it was never one for future employment. Professional courtesy and honesty in most cases go a long way (occasionally not). People understand when you leave for a better position. It's a small world and I guarantee if you do someone wrong, it will come back to bite you at some point in your career. Congratulations on your new position and best wishes.

That's IF your current airline's HR communicates with Flt Ops/training about this issue. Personally, I definitely would not punch out of training early.
