This is kind of a pointless argument as pursuing FE as a new career is certainly not viable, but the last FedEx 727 flew like 3 years ago. And off the top of my head- Kalitta Charters II, IFL, Amerijet, and Sierra West still fly 727s

I have one of a very few "mature" Flight engineer licenses issued. The writtens were not easy and there are no cram courses for them. (Never was for the recip or turbo propellor ratings, afaik.)
I was once a designee for Turbo jet FE license, but gave that up in 1988.

If he doesn't already have an F/E ticket, getting one today, will be very difficult.

Amerijet is down to one 727, which is rumored to be retired this summer.
I've got many friends from the last airline that are FE's, and besides one or two getting odd FE jobs all of them have either retired or found different lines of work.
That profession has been a dying breed for some time now, but it's definitely in the death throes now.
