Default Atlas vs staying with my current regional...

Hello all,

I'm a 36-year-old mid seniority regional capt, currently based in CMH and living near CVG. I currently get 15-16 days off a month, and am making the 2 hour drive to work once a week. I can't complain much. But I am starting to chomp at the bit to move on. Like many, I've been waiting for years for a call from the legacies, but I don't know if that will ever happen. I'm curious about Atlas, but several things scare me off.

1. 17 days on. I've got little ones at home and have no desire to be gone from home for so long.

2. Pay cut...it would take me about 3-4 years to get back to where I am now pay-wise.

3. Alot of the grumblings that I see here make me wonder a bit about job security there.

4. Attitude of mgmt towards the pilot group, in terms of contract violations and contract negotiations...again, outside looking in, it doesn't look too good.

All those things being said, I don't really know all that much about the company, hence why I'm here researching. Since I live in CVG, it would be convenient, and the earning potential is much higher than my current employer long-term. I've never been a "job-hopper" type, wherever I go I'd like to stay awhile. I've been debating this for a few years now, but still have yet to apply. Some of my friends are there, some enjoy it, others quit and came back to the regional. Thoughts?

I don't work at Atlas... but I do work at K4... same sorta operation.... if the 17 day schedules bother you then right off the bat its probably a non starter. I know that Atlas does build some schedules that don't conform to that and I am sure someone will chime in with more specifics. FWIW...most of the guys who like it at AMCI carriers like Atlas, K4..etc.. suffer the days on... for the long blocks of days off. YMMV. Good Luck in your decision.

Not Atlas, but living in CVG, you could get the 767 and be home more. You probably wouldn't do the multi-week death marches that the 747 does.

Their pay sucks and isn't getting better anytime soon.

Amazon isn't buying them to start Prime Air. Rumors that UPS might buy them are floating around.

True.

You probably work for RAH being based in CMH. I'd take an Atlas 767 over staying at RAH. Bid reserve in CVG and be home or bid a line and come home during the sort. You'd probably be working week on/week off schedule as a line holder.

Others answered your ACMI question well, as for mainline giving you a call, you need to do more.
Sign up for interview prep, and resume prep services. Some of the well known outfits have direct connections to the hiring departments at main line. Also, the resume prep services will get your resume through the computer firewall. A friend of mine started to make it a point that he would personally introduce himself to everyone in first class. One day, one of those people was a United VP. He was highly impressed and wrote him an amazing letter of rec directly to the chief pilot.
So if all you’re doing is going to work and racking up the hours, you won’t get that call.

AtlasFacts.org

There is an incredibly long thread on Atlas in the hiring section that you may have read.

The new guys are using Atlas as a stepping stone and the old guys are getting pretty fed up with the company for dragging their feet in negotiations (and abusing the contract, suing the pilots, etc)

Nice rumor, but it is completely untrue.

I have flown with many first year FO's who came from your situation to Atlas as an application box checker. It has worked for many of them. YMMV.

I am a 2-years FO at RAH, scores an average of 15-17 days off/month, credit an average of 94/month and seeing the $1600/month for the 4 months of training and the guaranteed 50 hrs credit the first year scares me. How could I live on $1600/month and the 50hrs credit - even though rumors has it that you end up crediting about 70 - brings me back to RAH year 1 pay rate. A bit scary. You need to have parents or a rich gf/wife to cover for you the first year at Atlas.

1st year pay might be the reason why I won't go to Atlas, because I just cannot afford it financially. Training pay is the killer actually.

Atlas's first year pay is the worst in the industry. Even worse than UPS except on 2nd year pay you're not making the huge jump you make at UPS. On 2nd year pay at UPS you'll be making more than a 12 year 747 Captain at Atlas.
