Amazon SUPER HUB with space port

(title) OK, everyone blows things out of proportion with amazon so I thought the title was appropriate. I think by now we all see amazon will follow the DHL model.

People at the hub (CVG) were talking about the inactivity over on the supposed land purchase/lease at the airport. Spent over an hour on the phone and several more online with Boone county & city of Florence. As of last week no permits have been applied for nor issued. They said you have to do surveys and drawings to even apply for a permit and none of that has been done.

The pipe dream continues. Oh well, back to the cornfield of ILN.

I think it's just Amazon hedging its bets. If thing don't work out with DHL they can build. My gut feeling is Amazon will buy or run DHL's US operation.

wjcandee 10-13-2017 11:02 AM

Kougarok: DHL's operation at CVG is too small for Amazon. The ramp is nearly full with parked DHL planes, and the sort capacity is already maxed out. DHL can do 80000 pieces per hour, and Amazon has already essentially fully-utilized that. So there is minimal ability to add routes that go through CVG. In the future, it makes sense for Amazon to maximize its return on investment by doing two sorts per day, and they have zero ability to use DHL for the night bank. So if they're going to stay at CVG rather than moving back to Hooterville, they need to build something and quick. Alternatively, they could just continue to grow through flights that bypass the Hub, as it looks like they will for now, but they seem to like the results of the sorting.

Oh, and I think sorting becomes significantly more important as they begin to expand into smaller cities, perhaps with less sizable aircraft. By the time they get to that point, they need to have a strong, operational sort facility with plenty of room for expansion. I assume that this wouldn't happen until they have all 40 767 aircraft smoothly in service.

Man, don't tease me. I love Kerbal Space Program.

On my last pattern, I kept hearing from mechanics and station reps that Amazon is pulling the plug on the idea of hub operations and just wants to go point to point.

wjcandee 10-14-2017 06:22 PM

Radials: I don't see how they can serve smaller markets in the future without sorting. I assume that all the additional flights for Peak will indeed bypass CVG, but I think that's simply because the DHL facility is maxed out. If it takes them a few years to build their own facility, then all the growth from the numerous additional Atlas planes will have to be point to point.

Amazon SUPER HUB with space port

Few things

-bypassing the hub for peak serves two fold. It controls volume for one. The other is that it takes away a bottle neck for job actions. Every pilot group on the ramp is disgruntled. Yeah I know there is a lot more to be said on this subject but it has to stay away from public forums.

Wjc absolutely agree on smaller markets unless they are thinking ground side for those rather than smaller capacity aircraft. Its a question of how fast is fast enough for prime

Construction, something I know a little about (sarcasm)

MS your absolutely right there should be some action there. I wouldn’t expect to see ground broke this fast but surveys or something going on. Something of that size would need a separate water/waste/drainage studies along with a site survey w/ plans to be submitted to airport board, county, and maybe city. Its no small or task. Obviously they aren’t really serious on getting it done.
