I have relatives that work at the Boeing Everett plant and have done the VIP tour. The fuselage barrels are continuously wound in a cross hatch way with carbon fiber. I’ve been told by engineers in the factory that you can’t convert a pax 787 to a freighter. If you want a freighter it needs to be engineered from the beginning.

Boeing doesn’t have a lot of interest converting pax to freighters. They would much rather sell a new freighter.

A not well known factoid about 787’s is you can have one of each flavor engine on it.

Cargo 767's are the equivalent of the pax 737 series.
New LDS/new avionoics 767's will be around another 25+ years with Boeing supporting the KC program. FDX purchases will be supported and coupled with KC assure viability.
767 is a profitable cargo jet, reliable, flexible volume for market diversity. Long future. All 767 freighter operators can continue to mutually support AOG issues common in industry. Critical in supporting a lower cost network of parts support worldwide.

Honest, non-snarky question: at what point in the process do they cut the lower cargo doors? Or, are they not cut, but wound around?

Same questions for boarding doors, cabin windows, and cockpit windows.

I am not sure. But if you look at some of the images online you can see that the area is reinforced around the doors. I think this is done in the autoclave.

I am just reporting what I’ve been told by Boeing engineers I know.

The bigger issue is new vs old. For an ACMI to be profitable, they can’t have an airplane that needs to fly 20+ hours a day to make the payments. A 747bcf is about 12 million on the used market right now. Cargo will be flying -400’s 25 years from now, I’d think.
What happened to the 777bcf ?

I had heard someplace last year that the cost to strengthen the Main deck floor was too cost prohibitive to make it economical. I have no idea if that is true or not.

If Amazon buys new build 767`s , expect FedEx and UPS shares to drop significantly , as did their competitors when Amazon purchased Wholefoods. It would signify that Amazon truly has a global agenda. For the right price , both Boeing and Amazon would jump at the opportunity. Question is , who would fly them ?

Good luck to them getting a new one for a few years. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't FedEx and the USAF own the 767 production line for a while with no new customers being able to get one unless they take a FDX or AF slot?
