UPS Pool
Does anyone know how big the pool is currently? My sponsor spoke with someone in HR last week who told him "he thinks it's almost empty" but doesn't work directly with poolies once they've been interviewed so isn't exactly sure... also someone in another thread (UPS Classes after 4/11) said they thought it was almost drained as well. I interviewed in early October and received a pool letter about 3 weeks later with a fax number to update personal info and a "don't call us, we'll call you" tone. I realize that 5 months isn't a really long time to be waiting compared to some who post here, so I wouldn't be especially worried except for the comments mentioned above and the fact that the online app has changed since I interviewed (I never did a psych test, but I feel perfectly sane :) ) and I'm wondering if it's possible I might have been lost in the shuffle when changing to the new system. Not sure if I should call HR directly and ask, as I said the pool letter doesn't sound like they're sitting by the phone waiting for folks to call and ask when they can start. I haven't heard a word since I got the letter (no pee test, psych test link, etc). Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Call HR!!! Be polite and professional, but ask the hard questions that concern you. The pool system is terrible. I think you would get a better answer than if you had one of your UPS friends call for you. Thay have had a history of screwing things up when admin processes change. I was called for a class date that was before my availability date. A week after that call I got my pool letter.

Buck, I interviewed in Oct. and recieved the pool letter a few weeks later as well. Since then, nothing. Updated via fax and nothing. Sounds like we are both in the same boat.... limbo.

My ex crashpad roommate interviewed the same month that I did. I was called with a class date 2 weeks after my interview. She was put in the pool and didn't get called for class until 5 months later. Her friend went into HR to check. Apparently, they somehow missed her paperwork or file or whatever. In any case, she received a call right after her friend went to check with HR. Moral of the story - If you have someone that can check with HR for you, have them do it. The HR people are nice but I have heard a lot of HR "misplaced" paperwork stories so I don't know what's going on in there.

I flew with a guy whose papers were lost for a couple of years. Finally he called and they found them. Another friend went to a job fair and told the UPS rep he had been in the pool for pover a year. The guy said "that's too long, why didn't you call us?" at which point my friend pulled out the letter that said "don't call us". These people aren't perfect. They are pretty nice to deal with though so you should be ok giving a call

I can't say that some of the situations described above did not happened to some poolies but the question of the pool was asked during indoc in the class which started a few days ago, and this is straight from the hiring manager's mouth. Those who have received a pool letter will get a class, but not necessarily first in first out. Right now, they are trying to match the experience of pilot being hired with the growth of the company. What this means is if you have international experience in heavy aircrafts, you will most likely be call to class and never see a pool letter. As for those in the pool, they liked you at the interview and want you to join the team, but do not necessarily think you are the best fit for the aircrafts with opening. Because of the 727 situations, there will likely not be anyone call for SO slots (panel sitting) and until they know where all the 727 displacees go (most likely to be all domestic slots), there will be limited slots available for those not going to the MD-11 or upcoming 74-4. I know this is one big run-on line...but hope it helps alleviate some anxieties in the prospective work force.

Skytremoter, I have a class date on the 23rd of April. I have been concerned that their needs/plan might change between now and then. (read displacement bid). what do you think the odds are of a delay in training if the guys like myself who might be pigeon holed for the narrow-body market (No heavy Intl time) if most of the displacements fill those seats?
It is rapidly coming up on time when I need to put in my notice.... and my worst nightmare would be a few days prior to class, getting a call that it is "indefinitly" delayed. I have no idea if UPS has ever done that to a class, but I know my operator has. Thanks for the info and insight. |

As a clarification to my last posting, I didn't mean to insinuate that if one didn't have the heavy/int'l experience, that you would get bypass. In fact, my class has a few guys without the heavy/int'l. From what I understand, the goal is to match up the experience, but that's not always feasible. The result of the displacement bid will be out on 03/26, but if you were called for a 04/23 class, the likelihood is that they've already factored in the available slots. As far getting enough time to advise current employer of your resignation, most of us in this latest class had exactly two weeks notice for class. |

I wouldn't worry about you giving notice and then being left high and dry by UPS. They have a pretty good history as far as that goes. In the past when they realized that they didn't need to hire anymore, they honored their commitment to those that they had extended offers to. Did that right up to the point when they threatened to furlough them in fact <G>. Seriously though, if they gave you a class date, you are golden. If you are slotted for a narrow body and they have no openings in that seat but openings in the wide body, you will be in the widebody not just passed over for a poolie. Welcome aboard |

I would talk to the HR but in person and not on the phone; I’d try to meet up with them at one of the job fairs, any job fair. Several folks in the HR have been promoted to different positions since you interviewed, also there’ve been many changes in the online application. I think showing up in person would only indicate how very serious you’re about joining Big Brown. That’s just what I’d have done; maybe having your sponsor call the HR would work too? I think that’s better than you calling them - after all they did instruct you not to call them - 5 months or not. However, you never got any instructions on not seeing them at a job fair again, did you? ;) Good luck to you! |
