Kalitta Air (K4) Information

The first set of 777 guy's are heading to sim next week. Still looking at Jun / Jul for the 1st airframe to arrive then it will have to go MX, proving runs etc. The FAA shutdown has pushed some of the program back and ETOPS is now looking at November at best.
744 is basically crewed as it should be plus 60+ still in the training pipeline (Initial, OE & CA UPGD). The 74 is going to be crewed heavy so when the 777 starts and more airframes arrive the vacancy bids will thus draw pilots from the 74 and not leave it short of crews (don't expect the company to wave the 2 year equipment lock).
The days of FO's getting 90+ hours and a wealth of overtime for CA's & FO's are over. Plan on 64 hours pay.
76 still needs crews but sim availability is slowing initial and upgrade training.
Interviewing is still going on and classes are planned into May right now.
Now the other glitch is that DHL do not want 744's (-8's yes) operating from end of 2021, doesn't mean the 744 will go away, still plenty for it to do (THY, MIL etc), expansion of 76 & 777 fleets.
In the long run, take whatever fleet you get offered, they all pay the same and bypassing a class date because you didn't want XXX may also mean you won't get another call, they'll call the next on the list!!

New contract negotions are right around the corner. Excellent Union leadership. Great relationship with the company. However, there will be NO BIG PAY RAISES. Very difficult for the Union to show the company how paying pilots more money makes more money for the company. Company knows most pilots will not be willing to make a lateral move and lose their current pay rate while they start over.

Does seat lock only apply for same seat, or if you upgrade is that allowed within the 2 year lock? Sound's like this may not be too common an issue soon if upgrades get a little longer.

Nah, it’s an equipment lock. If you start in the right seat of the 74, you can move to the left seat within that two years (assuming you have the seniority).

Any locks I have ever had previously had at other companies let you upgrade unrestricted, but you couldn't move right seat to right seat within 2 years.

So an already over-leveraged competitor (with on-going labor problems) just acquired more debt. Sounds like we might get underbid on the next contract or several. ...and the problem is? (thinking two chess moves ahead)

In general I value your opinions and what you have posted on this forum, now and in the past. But unless you are an active member of management who will be in the the negotiating room with both sides present, why would you post something like this? Surely you you know that management will see this or have it printed out for them to read. You are hurting our cause, YOUR union’s cause, when you say things like this. Frankly I am surprised you would put something like this out, especially considering your previous union negotiating experience in your previous career. Please consider your potential audience, many of whom certainly are not active K4 ALPA members. We intend to have pay raises, as well as much better retirement and a host of other things that we WILL achieve at the negotiating table.

Atlas is a perfect example of how the RR labor act is against the working man. They work for a debt heavy company and have a solidarity against overtime. They are not filling classes. Yet their management still manages to not negotiate in good faith, keep the ship afloat and even manage to keep us from acquiring 4 new airframes. I too have heard the 2021 deadline from DHL. I wonder what Atlas will do with all those 400’s they haven’t leased?
Please do not put unrealistic goals on our negotiating committee. IMO, presenting things that enhance quality of life and either help efficiency, or don’t cost much is the way to go. Your Union management and negotiating committee are very aware of the behind the scene financial situation with other staff members. The company is solid financially, but is not flush with cash. It cost money to expand and like anything most things, the return on investment, takes a while.
Solidarity comes from union members knowing all the facts and having realistic expectations. What I write in no way influences what the company or our negotiating committee does. Their people, like our people are 6 moves ahead of these statements.
My statements are on a new hire forum, and intended to give a potential new hire who might get the impression that we are the next FedEx, a dose of reality.

Thank you for the complement. That’s why it is listed as my predictions. Anyone who thinks that big pay raises and retirement benefits are in your future does not understand how things at K4 work. More importantly, you would be placing an unrealistic burden on our negotiating committee. When the environment creates a situation where it makes more money to pay more money, they will pay more money. Company needed to expand, we couldn’t hire pilots. Hence new contract.
