R2 I think is a two hour call out, from the hotel room they are paying for. They give you a window that is active for the reserve status. 99.9% of the time you can sleep through it without getting a phone call. Don't think I've ever been called on one. You just need to be an adult and be flight ready incase they call.

In addition, scheduling here has so far been pretty good. If nothing is going on I’ve had them cut me lose early.

Like No Land 3 wrote, its only for certain time periods. Usually a maximum of 12 hours. While not duty Reserve is not rest so they can’t have you on call for 24 hours. You usually have time to do things even with R2 periods.

I'm going with the FAA definition and the FAA has consistently maintained that reserve time is not duty, it just is not rest though I'm not 100% sure about 117, which doesn't apply to us anyway. Also, I glanced at the contract but did not find anything there but I may have missed it.

Regardless of what the FAA states, the contract considers Reserve time as Duty:
Section 25:
Maximum Duty Period
a. R-2 shall not exceed twelve (12) consecutive hours.
b. The Maximum Duty Period when R-2 is combined with another Duty
Assignment is as set forth in Section 18.
