Kalitta Air (K4) Information

I don’t think it’s hard to understand guys in a US seniority system getting a little upset about seeing people way junior to them taking seats they have a bid in for. Some I’ve heard talking about it had no idea it was even in the contract, including long time captains.
So what that they hired a couple guys to play captain for 270 days. It was agreed upon by the union (all of us) when the contract was signed. If you want to be a captain on brand new equipment, you either have to bend over and kiss the ring, or be patient.

What in the world are you talking about? Everyone knew they were going to hire an initial cadre, and it’s been discussed here for a long time. Hell, even K4ALPA said there will be an initial cadre. Not the mention the latest 777 captain bid was pretty darn junior.

Post #650 and every update after that. From K4ALPA:
When the 777 comes online, who will fly it?
An initial cadre has been selected to start the program. A bid will open soon to staff the aircraft, and if any member of the initial cadre cannot hold the bid due to seniority, they will be displaced in 270 days.

Perhaps you could go on comply 365 and search the Collective Bargaining Agreement, or if you are technically challenged, you could reach out to a union Representative for clarification on this issue. This might influence your decision regarding trying to promote your dark and completely inaccurate description of what has occurred here.
You do realize that if K4 has an Atlas run of bad luck we may not be large enough to weather that storm without significant pain. Safety always needs to be number one for us as a Union and as a Company

What are you, CNN, MSNBC? Why do you keep accusing me of “dark” stuff in what I’m saying, and yet you provide no answers or explanation to counter what I’m saying. Just revert to baseless accusations in any argument. It would be like me accusing you of abusing people without providing any instances or proof to back it up.

Yes, it’s obviously in the contract and legal, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to think that it’s right and like it. In 23 years of working for airlines, I’ve never experienced anything like this. Regionals are hiring street captains because they don’t have enough qualified pilots or bidders for those seats. Since the last contract, K4 has been getting lots of very qualified applicants and had sufficient time to fill these positions internally.

Thanks, I but read it when I first heard about it. First off there is a “sufficient” number of crew members on the seniority list, and secondly it says “may operate,” not WILL operate.

I read that as though they had selected certain people from either or both the current 747/767 training cadre to come over to start that program and backfill their positions from the ranks.

What kind of travel benefits do you guys get?
I like the idea of home basing, but I’m trying to determine if it’s feasible to live outside of the country. My understanding is that you just have to get to any US airport the company can buy you a ticket out of? Thanks.

Most of the guys we have that live outside of the country live very near our major hubs (Leipzig, Hong Kong, etc). They either ask the company to start there, or catch company equipment to their first leg.

I sure would like to be part of this pilot group and fly for Kalitta but I have a wife and a dog that still loves me. How do you guys manage this? Seems like six- seven days is about the limit for normal ops around my ranch?
#1989
If your wife is fairly independent (can go get her oil changed, can deal with minor house problems, etc) it works out great. If however, you can’t handle being away for more than a week, don’t bother. You WILL be gone for 16 days in a row with very few exceptions.

I would think the company wanted some one that was intimately familiar with that tail because they wanted the least amount of hiccups getting it on the certificate and also getting ETOPS on board. Not to mention all the stuff they've been doing in YIP, like getting all the flight followers to get their dispatch licenses, new buildings, a corporate restructuring, etc. Seems almost like a no brainer to take onboard a few of their highly experienced CA's to help the process along for 270 days.
