This is inaccurate. During your interview, they ask your equipment preference. When you are initially offered a position, it will be on either the 747, 767, or 777. At that point, if you don’t want the offered equipment, you walk away, or stay in offered equipment until you can hold your preferred equipment.

Showing up for class and being told “oh sorry, we need you on the 76 instead” is never going to happen.

OK, ask the guys the got 2/3rds of the way through classic training and then got sent to the 400. I could give other examples but trust me, they will ask you your choice but if something changes or they feel that another candidate would be better in a particular slot you are not getting your first choice. A new hire is on probation at Kalitta Air for a year, just like almost every airline in the Western world, and during that year they can do pretty much anything they please with your equipment choice.

The guys that were pulled from the classic and put on the 400 were the lucky ones. Did you ever talk to the guys right above that finished and went to the classic? Do you know how often they flew? It was done for a good reason. As a new hire today, I wouldn't waste any energy worrying about switching equipment midstream. It would also be a logistics nightmare for the training department today.

Default Kalitta Air (K4) Information

Recent long article published. Good comparisons, very interesting and much needed light into ACMI’s... Meat and bones in the middle, and end but I wonder how accurate the details.

Odd thread to share that given that K4 doesn’t fly for Amazon. It does mention that we make more than Atlas and ABX/ATI in one little blurb though.

You don’t fly for Amazon ...,YET. I figure after it’s revealed ATSG cannot find and hire the crews for AZN expansion, Connie will swoop in and fill the void.

I thought Bezos already came to Connie and he wanted no part with Bezos demand that he own part of the company? There is a reason Bezos wants part ownership, so he can inject his style of labor relations. I want nothing to do with that.

It is an operational control requirement. Unless that changes I don’t see K4 flying Amazon.

My predictions? As noted in the last CP meeting, Atlas obtained the 4 400’s that we were supposed to get this year.

With the lack of 767 sim time availability, I see hiring slowing down for a bit. Most new hires will be assigned the 767, as that is where our growth is right now. The FAA has experienced some staffing issues and the ETOPS programs for everyone are behind schedule. For now expect hub freight flying.

400 new hire classes have gone from 16 back to 8, as staffing is finally catching up to airframes. More captain upgrades in the pipeline.

As the ioe pipeline empties out over the next few months, the 100 hour+ months for FO’s will be over. As the new Captains come online the same will happen for Captains.

777? Still awaiting word on who gets the first 4 DHL CMI aircraft. With ETOPS behind schedule, it may not bode well for K4. I still see us getting some of the aircraft, but we may be a 1 777 aircraft fleet for a while.

New contract negotions are right around the corner. Excellent Union leadership. Great relationship with the company. However, there will be NO BIG PAY RAISES. Very difficult for the Union to show the company how paying pilots more money makes more money for the company. Company knows most pilots will not be willing to make a lateral move and lose their current pay rate while they start over.

My point? If you are after big money, or a quick upgrade, you should look elsewhere. If you are a professional pilot who wants to see the world, work with other professional pilots who know how to have fun on the overnights, fly very well maintained aircraft, work for a company that puts your family first when crisis hits at home, and make a good living, come to K4.
