MD-11F Crew Seating

Since the MD-11F has only a crew of two, is there a third seat available for, say, a time when a pilot is hitching a ride back, or an observer is certifying one of the crew?

What was your question again

Can three people (pilot, co-pilot, and observer) travel on a MD-11F and be seated all the time? Is there a third seat available for the third person?

Birdsmash 07-25-2018 08:21 PM

Yes. That FO’s sister has a seat also.

There are multiple seats on the aircraft. Some aircraft have more than others. Some aircraft have bunks available for crew rest. Some do not. Long flights require additional crew; some crews consist of two, three, or four pilots. Additionally, jumpseaters, company personnel, mechanics, loadmasters, etc, may be on board, as well as couriers, animal handlers, etc.

Thank you John Burke. I suspected that there would be extra seating installed, particularly on those aircraft that were flying freight over large distances with minimal or no intermediate stops and extra crew needed to be carried. I was having difficulty finding plans that showed the lay out of the F variant. There were lots of links to plans showing the seating arrangement of the regular passenger aircraft, the MD-11.

Cheers, Peter.

There are multiple configurations for the MD11F; it depends on the operator as to how the seating is configured, particularly aft of the cockpit.

Smartcockpit.com has some useful information for lay research. That should suffice for a book. It’s also open source information which doesn’t compromise any specific procedures.

I don't think smartcockpit has anything on the MD-11. I believe they used to have it, but it's not there now.

MD11.org, I think, has some information.

Thank you Elevation. I'll check it out - Peter
