Subic Layover

Has anyone done any scuba diving over in Subic? Looking for some info on setting up a dive on a 38hr layover. Thanks

TonyC 04-11-2007 04:23 PM

I believe there are at least 2 dive shops on the bay, and there are several wrecks that make interesting dives. It shouldn't be long before an expert will pipe up here with the details.

There are 3 places that I know of. I can personally recommend 2 of them.

First place is VASCO's on Magellan's point (on base) Brian is the head Divemaster) I have dove there 3 times. It costs about $27.usd per dive.
The food and drink isn't too bad.

The 2nd place is the Blue Rock resort (off base) out the back gate towards Subic City in the Barrio. Tomo is the Head guy. Prices are about the same.
Blue rock has a good restaurant/bar for after wards. And the eyeball liberty isn't too bad. Blue Rock has a website. You might try googling "Blue Rock Subic bay"

The closet place (walking dist from the hotel) is the Scuba Shack (right down the street from the Legenda Hotel. I have never dove with these guys. Drank many a pitcher of San Migel and ate a few burgers there.

The Bay is loaded with wrecked ships and a few Aircraft. All my diving there has been local in the bay. They do have trips that go farther out but I can't comment on those.

In the winter months, (non Rainy season) the visibility is pretty good .
During rainy season the water can get a little murkey.
The hotel Desk can give you the phone numbers and call a taxi for you...................400 pesos to Magellans or Blue rock (8 bucks)

I'd highly recommend the Blue Rock, not so much for the dive facilities or the food at the bar, but because it's much closer to Muffdivers.:D

I have done some diving at the Blue Rock. Nothing to write home about as far as stuff to see and visibilty but fun time. Like the other guy said great place to hang out too. Nice clean place, great food, LBFM'S and cheap booze.

Olongapo is a Kinder gentler place now. Nothing like it was when the
fleet pulled in back in the day........You can still get into trouble though and the San Migel tastes the same. And the Sh*t River smells the same!

What else besides Scuba and Muff diving? I heard somthing about feeding chickens to tigers?

Also where do you get the legitimate massages, manicure, pedicure etc?

scarface 04-11-2007 07:14 PM

I believe it was ducks to an alligator and to my knowledge there is no such thing as a legitimate massage etc. within a 50 mile radius of Subic.

Oh no! Not the Duck:eek:

fecav8r 04-11-2007 07:48 PM

Go to the Legenda hotel for the haircut, pedicure, manicure. Go to any of the massage places "on base" for the legitimate massages and a good dive place is run by a FedEx guy here in Subic. You get a 10% ALPA discount and the dive master is a great gal that will take you to some great diving an hour or so north of here if you give her a couple of days notice. The name escapes me but it is located at the pool of the Subic Int' hotel.

Do you get the ALPA discount if you fly a disputed pairing in order to get the SFS layover? I hope not.

angry tanker 04-11-2007 09:43 PM

Thanks for the info guys. I figure it would be better to do the diving before the party!

MD114Ever 04-11-2007 09:43 PM

Can one get scuba certified on a layover?

I would think you would need atleast a 4 day layover to get the cert. It requires about 5 dives, both in the pool and the open water portion. Plus throw in the 24 hour buffer and I think you'd be pushing it.

JetJocF14 04-12-2007 05:21 AM

Dove once out of the Scuba Shack. Dive master was pretty good in that we wanted to dive on the US New York in about 90 feet of water. First question was when are you boys going flying and we said in about 20 hours. His respone was I don't think so. Dove on an old PTboat in about 30 feet of water and an old spanish galleon at the mouth of subic near Grande Island. Really just a couple of wooden beams but still fun.......

There's a water park not far away - swim with dolphins there. Go over to the Legenda (I think that's the name, on the way to Scuba Shack from Grand Seasons) for a decent haircut, manicure and pedicure - call for an appointment though.

There is a Place called "Safari Land" or something of that nature where you ride in the back of a caged Jeepney. You drive through an open area and they feed the tigers with dead chickens. I have heard that they tease the tiger with the chicken and make it jump up on the Jeepney and it claws after the dead chicken through the cage.....................

Knowing the Phillipines the way I do, I don't think that is for me......................

I think you would prefer to get a Legitimate massage...........................
You will be legitimatley happy afterwards...................

You'll have to find out that answer on your own.......:p

SikPilot 04-12-2007 11:33 AM

Ask for Mo(owner Dave Fisher) at Kokomoz where to get a happy ending.

Anything is possible in Subic with a pocket full of pesos. If God had not created the place, Walt Disney would have!:D

Not in this politically (IN)correct environment.

The sad part is Subics fun zone is getting better.
