Happened to me 15 years ago. Went to an AirInc job fair in August '05, right after CAL started hiring again. At the time, in order to avoid lines queuing up, CAL adopted a "take a number" scheme like they have at the supermarket deli. At the opening of the conference they asked for people who met certain conditions to stand up, and they'd get the first numbers for the day. I met one of the conditions, so I got a golden ticket to see them right at the beginning. After meeting them, they said everything looked great and that I would be on the short list for an interview. It never came. Over the next two years, many friends got hired, and I built up over a dozen internal recs. Still no interview call. In the fall of '07, I happened to share a crashpad in EWR with a CAL 75/76 captain who was a good friend of the CAL CP, they had been new-hire sim partners and they would regularly meet up for dinner or drinks when this guy went through IAH. So one day, while sitting in the crash pad, I was on reserve for my airline, and he was headed out on a trip that evening, he decided to call the CP on my behalf to inquire about my application. He put the call on speakerphone, but didn't tell the CP I was there listening. It took about 15 minutes, but the CP came back and said that he was shocked that I had not been called for an interview two years ago because I was still sitting in the pile for those to be called. He said everything looked great on my app, so he asked the woman who scheduled the interviews to put me as the first person to be called for the next round, and that I would get a call "within two weeks". The call never came.
So yeah, sometimes we are the victims of unfortunate circumstances that are beyond our control. You can do all the "right" things and never get a call simply because you don't meet a certain profile, you have too much experience, you don't have enough experience, you don't know the right person, you share a last name with someone people don't like, your resume slipped off the table and fell behind a filing cabinet (I have heard that one before too), etc.
Oh well. I will wait with fingers crossed and hope for the best, and congratulate the guys who do get the call.
