A more accurate analogy would be Home Depot paying a guy in a trench coat to stand next to a Walgreens and sell Cialis.

That might be the only thing they are doing right...there is a good reason there are other big players at those locations.

Question: Will this result in a "Pilot Base" at AFW ? Is this Prime Air or another company (Amazon themselves, aka Amazon employee-Pilots?) doing this ?

Hey Barry, Thanks for your question. For what it's worth the ACMI world for the Prime Air banner is nothing short of a dumpster fire. At the moment ATI is doing a bit of flying under the ATSG umbrella as the ABX pilots are still being punished for the strike so we have a bit less than what the original gentleman's agreement had for us (Note: Never make a gentleman's agreement with ATSG). Also Atlas is doing a bit of the flying as well. I'd say between those two that is who you will see in AFW as Amazon is all about marketing and very little overhead (i.e. an airline with union pilots) so of course it will be Amazon painted airplanes and definitely NOT an ABX colored airplane. SO that being said there will not be a pilot because the resultant dumpster fire from poor management decisions (Which in my opinion is also coming from Amazon) has left all the airlines with the inability to expand pilot bases let alone maintain what they are barely holding onto. Hope this helps. Also, doing some picking around on APC will reveal just how out of control the dumpster fire is. Being in it I can't say it's embellished much and most all the ACMI's working for AMZ and DHL are pretty disgruntled in an epic way.

Its pretty amazing on how these stories get embellished.

1) Amazon doesn’t like dealing with main hubspoke type airports. They dont like the traffic.

2) They have been trying to get off that FedEx ramp for a while but there is no where to go for that area.

Besides at the rate they move Ill be dead and everyone on here retired. How is that Amazon mega sort coming along in CVG?

The only way Amazon becomes another UPS is if they decide to become major players in the express shipping business and the FAA makes them do it. Even then, look at DHL - they're a fairly large operation in this country, and they have at least seven different airlines contracted.

Amazon has hired away a number of people away from UPS. A few years back they had no assets for logistics. Then they got planes, then they got trailers. Now they have package cars. They still use contractors to fly and drive. I imagine it will be like UPS where the infrastructure is being built and then they will bring everything in house. Who knows maybe like FDX ground model and subcontract. Either way its growing very fast. I expect Amazon to fill space from forwarders and pick up the USPS contract. Either way they are growing quickly.

With the amount of money they have. Maybe they will just buy FedEx, UPS, or just bribe Congress and ship ultra cheap USPS.

They will never bring anything in-house. They operate on thin margins and make money by selling products on a massive scale and contracting out cheap labor to fulfill their deliveries. An in-house delivery system isn’t in their business model.

That could work......except they have modeled themselves after DHL and so far neither one has a clue what they are doing. Sure DHL is hugh....but my guess is their costs to ship are twice as much as FedEx or UPS. Its a clown show every night. I have had Amazon drivers show up in a 80's Continental with bald tires and no exhaust. It's like a Chevy Chase movie driving to Wally World.

Nothing that involves an Indian burial ground ever goes well.
