20 AA 763s to ATSG

I promise I am not trying to stir the pot - I just saw this in our daily company email blast. All this info is for public consumption, otherwise I would not have posted it.

This week, we signed an agreement to sell all 24 of our Boeing 767s as they leave the American fleet over the next few years. All 24 are being sold to Jetran, with 20 planned to subsequently undergo cargo conversion and be operated by ATSG.

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

Now, who would like the presents Santa Soaper has in his big sack? More importantly, what would you GIVE him?

I heard this news weeks ago.. they are not for abx use. They are primarily for leasing to offshore carriers as well as carriers that abx is in competition with.

Neither ATSG carrier (ATI nor ABX) would be able to staff that many airframes with the pilot contracts currently in force.

Sad, but true.

First year pay is $42000 at ABX with 17 days on. It roughly doubles second year if the airline isnt shut down.

The most recent AA retirement schedule for these aircraft is apparently 6 in 2019, 13 in 2020, and 5 in 2021. Given that they're only committing to 20, this means it's most likely 6, 9, and 5, which is actually a schedule that's completely doable if the demand is there. Smart to tie these up, for fleet consistency and the potential for a resale if necessary. There will be plenty of similar aircraft coming off of other carriers in the same time period, so it's not like they're cornering the market, but they will have a largely consistent base of feedstock to convert. Apparently, the onesie-twosie nature of the 767 fleet at GTI adds some additional challenges for the crews and maintainers.

Don’t forget the Airbuses start coming online Q3 this year too.

Yeah, that's the latest CAM conversion, and UPS wanted to ACMI it for Peak, so ATI put it into service unpainted for now. IAI sprayed some silver over the green parts before delivery so it wouldn't look too terrible.
